It’s been quite sometime since I’ve posted. After my father died many years ago, I found his Gillette Aristocrat rarely used -if at all. It’s my go to razor but I think that I might’ve been a little too aggressive with the cleaning of it so it’s a bit worn and scratched. But just a few weeks ago my brother had contacted me to say that he found another one of my dad’s razors- a Ronson Razor Shave and Sharpens. I had read somewhere that people were modifying blades so that they could use it since the blades are no longer available. If anybody knows anything about this and can share their knowledge that would be great. Also I received a Carl Michaels brush that I would like to disinfect. So any tips on that would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you so much and I would appreciate sone feedback. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I cant help you with the blade mod. Just had to say that I think those are three beautiful pcs, and you must be proud to own them. Thanks for sharing them here. As far as disinfecting a vintage brush, all I've ever done is soap and water. I suppose you could use an antibacterial soap or some type of vinegar solution. I've been comfy with a warm water soap washing and a dry off period with any vintage brush I've aquired. Beautiful pcs...all three.
I have a Ronson also but haven't tried to use it yet. I found this about blade modification for the Ronson. This was in the comments: "bullriderinwrangler1 2 years ago You're welcome. The Ronson is a fantastic razor, but I wouldn't recommend using the vintage blades. Alternatively, I have used vintage Leresche blades (3 hole blades) and used a dremel tool to cut the notches in the sides to fit the Ronson." I think I would prefer the Leresche mod and those are available on eBay.
That Gillette Aristocrat was made sometime between 1948 and 1951. If you want to narrow that range down first thing to look at is the base plate on the side where you load the blade it will either say pat nos on package or pat nos on pkg. If it says package it is 1948 - 1950, if it says pkg then 1950 or 1951. We can narrow it down further from there if it says package you need to look at the style of ring on the base plate where it says pat nos on package they changed the dies in 1949 so if depending the style it will be a 48 - 49 or 49 - 50. If it says pat nos on pkg you need to look on the underside of the baseplate and see if it has a date code or not. They used a letter and number for example W is 1951 and the number would be what quarter of the year it was either 1 through 4. If it has no date code stamps it is a 1950 if it does it is either 1950 or 1951 depending the stamp.

I LOVE the design of the Ronson Razor, but when it comes to „rinsing“ during or after a shave, can it be rinsed normally like every other razor under running water? I think water could maybe damage the leather to strop the blade with or am I wrong? What do you as an owner of this beautiful razor do to take care of your Ronson? Do you have any special „Treatment“ for this razor? Do you care about the leather strop?
I might be mistaken, but I was under the impression that the Ronson razors used a rubber roller (with applied sharpening paste) to hone the blade.
Phew…i dońt know, but i guess it is leather to strop the blade. I did not read anywhere that there is a need for sharpening paste to be added to the roller. So, i saw a few videos on YouTube where the persons just regularly rinsed their razor in the sink filled with water. My idea would be that water will damage the leather (if it is leather) on the roller. But that is just my thought. Maybe we have users here, who can specify things and help us out. I found this here on the Internet…but it does not help if it´s leather or not. Nevertheless very interesting…
Hi Friends, a friendly member which has some informations about old razors, did send me a link with some more informations and an interesting photo of the "Razor-Patent" which i will post here seperately. In the discription (it is too much to write it down here completely) there is a passage where it says: "As shown in Figs 8,9,10 and 11, the honing roller is preferably provided with a single continous helix comprising a single coil. This roller my be made of any suitable material, such as bakelite, molded on to a core or sleeve which is preferably roughened, as is indicated , to prevent relatively longitudinal and rotational movement between the roller and the sleeve." Just for me and my brain to get it correctly...when the roller would be made of Bakelite and it´s roughened, this is not as effective as it would be with leather or am i wrong? And IF the roller is made of leather, then it would not be the best idea to let it get in touch with water, correct? I am cunfused right now...
Bottom line, regardless of what the roller is made of, it's going to get wet. Lather is wet. The only way to clean a razor that has been used and now has lather and hair down into the the little crevices is to subject it to water to rinse and clean. That's how it was designed and made. Use it, don't abuse it, but don't worry about it, either. Enjoy the shave!
You said it right Steve. I am thinking it over and over, but for what? Like you said, use it, don´t abuse it and don´t worry about it.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I proudly present my newest addition to my den. A Ronson Razor in near mint condition. Only minor signs of usage. The razor has been cleaned and disinfected and is ready to get it´s maiden voyage on Wednesday. The original blade can unfortunately not be used. I asked a friend if he would be able to hone the blade and polish it, but he said, that it would be too difficult to hone this blade. So i will try it either with Injector Blades or with regular DE-Blades. My god is this a beauty It is really a piece of art. By the way…does anyone has an idea how old these 7 o ´clock Blades are? Greetings Thorsten
I am sure you have seen this, this guy gets his wet, interesting (believable?) comment about the numbers.... Ronson Shave Video
