Russian Straight Razor Thread

This one might not fully qualify for this thread
It's a German made razor (Rob Giersch, Solingen) pre-1918 with Russian writing targeting the Russian market.
"Ручаюсь на 5 лѣтъ" - meaning: "warranty for five years"

 

Welcome Comrade..Interesting SR..Going by that Date..It would have Been Marketed in Russia before Our Glorious Marxist 1917 Revolution..

Well, I gave in to peer pressure. I have two Soviet straights inbound. I don't need two, but if I'm going to pay that much shipping, I might as well, right? Plan on honing them myself.

I just want to make sure the two soviet straights I have had are outliers. I am seriously not impressed so far, but everyone else on this thread likes them. Here's to hoping I get some good ones!

Excellent @Drygulch . What is your plan for the dud? Is there a way to take the scales off, reheat is and put a temper back into the blade? I know it would be a pain, but wouldn't it b interesting if it could be done? Just heat it up, and dunk it in some water, hoping the blade doesn't crack. Well, it's a little more to it than that. I tempered a spring steel knife I made, when I was in college. I worked at a steel mill for a summer.

I plan on sending it to @NCoxSTL to be stored with the rest of his non functioning Russian shave gear.

I spent a lot of time honing this "Dawn" razor on Saturday. It still needs a lot of work. In fact, I think I need to go back to bevel setting. I had to finish the shave with another razor I honed on Saturday.

 

Been there, done that, with other razors.
At least you are going to give it another try.

 

Brian..You Should be Able to Shave with that from the 1K Stone..Mine was Crazy Sharp from the 1k Stone..It was Cutting Hanging Hairs from the Bevel Hone like a Laser..Nae Kiddin..

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll try it again. My rookie honing skills bit me on this one. I don't think it's the razor.

 

Aye..These Later Russian SRs Take a Wicked Edge on the 1 K Stone..Keep it on the 1 K Stone till its there..

I need a good 1k stone. My King 1k stone is lacking. Toooooooooooooo slooooooooow. Sorry just thinking about setting a bevel with the King made me doze off for a second. But, it still works.
