That's the part I don't understand. One version of the rumor has it that Gillette had to go back and redesign it as they weren't happy with the initial results. If true, I assume it means one of two things: Either a) they weren't getting the production yield/quality they wanted (see Rockwell's experiences with the 6S) or b) they ran it by a focus group and got negative feedback.

If we assume that it was a production issue, then I'd speculate that they are/were going with cast metal rather than stamped brass.

If it was a focus group/shave test issue, then I'd be inclined to wonder if there is something about a classic Tech that makes it less desirable to a modern wet shaver. (It seems like DE razors with thin baseplates/safety bars, like the Tech, are mostly at the low end these days. The more common current design is a much thicker chunk of metal like an EJ89.)

Personally, I'm beginning to think that the AoS Tech is not going to happen. I think there were definitely plans for one as evidenced by the prominent placement of a Fat Handle Tech razor in their current marketing materials, but I think it as fallen by the wayside for reasons unknown. The problem is- the mot recent rumors had it coming out in the Fall. At this point, Fall has already begun and we're rapidly entering the window where they need to announce the product just to have it ready for Christmas sales.

A shame, really. It would be interesting to hear the behind-the-scenes story. In principal, it should be easy to produce a quality modern Tech. I suspect the truth is a sad commentary on modern manufacturing, especially in the US (reportedly the AoS Tech is being made in Ohio).

I'm having trouble understanding why Gillette would do this in the first place. Too many years of marketing multi blade razors to expect any kind of return on reintroducing the tech. There's a lot of competition in the DE razor market, vintage razors of which there seems to be an endless supply and all the modern ones from the cheap all the way to high end stainless ones. I mean that they have to create a demand or take a slice of the current market. Not much meat there for a company that size.
