Your razor probably has soap scum and such built up inside the handle and spring chamber which is causing spring tension issues and preventing the doors from closing properly. One can alleviate the problem with a dissembling and cleaning of these areas on a 1958-60 Fatboy.. But the later adjustable Gillettes, like yours, have a press fit end cap which may need to be re-machined to get the razor back together. This guy knows everything about these razors.. http://www.restoredrazors.com/index.php?route=information/contact. Although Dave is apparently not taking on any more work for a while, he still might be available for consultation. Dave goes by the name anotoman here and on BB...
The Schick Krona is one of my favorite razors and is the only non-vintage Gillette in my den. Unfortunately, these guys are going the way of the Gillettes, price wise, on the "bid-and-win" sites...$$$$.
Amen to that! However I don't really agree with you when it comes to the looks. I really like the way it looks and that the weight and balance is spot on. It's a good thing we all like different things. That way I can get more of them cheap.
One of my favorites too. I ended up using it exclusively for about 4 months over all my others. Not even sure why other than it shaves great. Oddly enough, Derbys seem to work best in the Krona than any other razor I've used. No idea why.
Dear Lex, That could suggest a previous owner didn't loosen the head before adjusting it. If you don't like the Gillette Slim, there is something seriously wrong here. The Krona armed with a Feather blade is a favorite combo for me. I have a tough whiskers.
