Keeping with the SE theme today's razor is a Rocnel that uses half a DE blade.

I did not want to deal with wax spot removal today so I broke a Personna Med Prep in half and loaded the razor. Happily did four passes with the smell of the sea and citrus. Tomorrow starts Korea's thanksgiving holiday, Chusok. Chusok follows the lunar calendar and this year it is Wednesday through Friday.... which means 5 days off. So tomorrow I will be back to straight razor shaving.

I've found the Type E to be a great razor that likes to bite. It is such a different animal than the DE razors that I think it just takes time and practice, of course. I just never spend much time with them though I do like how they work!

I'll get Dmitri working on the cookies. He makes a mean PB&C cookie. That's peanut butter and caviar. Quite the taste sensation. American/Russian fusion in baking.

Well it's been 12+ hours since I shaved and we have a winner. While I don't think I could go wrong with either razor there is just more growth on the 1924 side so this round goes to the 1914. As a side note, I was just complemented on my aftershave. The Stirling Barbershop is still going strong 12+ hours later!

I'll give it another go tomorrow. I have a G, and that provides great shaves. I have high expectations for this razor.

Today I used the plisson-style knot for a quick comparison to the tuxedo knot that I've been using for the past couple of weeks. This knot felt like it loadrd more soap, but at the same time it held onto more as well. I had tons leftover. Both synthetic knots are super soft.

Yes, I actually did use 3 razors for tonight's shave. I took my fist baby steps with a straight, my Ontario Cutlery CO. I did the flats of my cheeks and part of my neck. And while it did cut whiskers it still needs to be a tad sharper.

After those areas I finished the pass with the rolls razor, just like with the rapid it did ok on the easy areas but ready sucked with the though whiskers on my chin.I did another pass with the Rolls but discovered that it really wasn't close enough.

Final pass with the G1 to clean things up and I'm happy with a nice DFS. Time to get some more practice honing to learn to get those edges a bit sharper. Have a nice night my friends!

Ralf Aust 5/8, still two pass perfect! Love the AV Musk and plan to use it more. The weather is finally breaking and the crops are coming in on the prairie. Other than that... All is quiet in Colorado.

    Have a great Tuesday!

PS. @NCoxSTL - I forgot to look for Crystal. Apologies.

    SEptember 12, 2016

Long day and I'm 4 shave reports behind, so this will be my SEptember report on using the GEM Featheweight.

    IMG_4598.JPG

2-day growth, 3-pass shave (WTG, XTG, ATG)
    GEM PFTE blade (4).

After my struggles with the 1912 GEM (mostly in getting the ATG angle right on my chin) @clint64 gave the sage advice of starting my journey with GEM-types by using a Featherweight. He knew that I had just spent a year with injectors and his opinion was the Featherweight was probably most like an injector than any other GEM.

After my first shave - I knew he was right. The weight, the easy ability to find the correct angle, the injector-like manuverability despite its longer blade width all combined to make me feel as though I was using an injector. Reminded me somewhat of shaves with the Schick Es and Gs.

None of the shaves caught the baby, but I never chased.
    Of the 4 shaves
    - two were 3 out of 5 stars (a Solid Shave) they didn't clean my chin of stubble for 8 hrs.
    - one was a 4 (Above Average) - stubble free for 8 hours
    - one shave, the first one was barely a 2 star (Below Average). I realized that I was not using a PFTE blade. I think it was a stainless and it dawned on me right at the beginning of the shave. I knew that the next day's shave with a PFTE would prove my blade assumption. It did.

I'm content in knowing that a longer stint with this combo would provide consistent, above-average shaves. I'm tempted to do that, but impatience will get the better of me as we get closer to midway in the month and I still have at least two more SEs to sample.

So what should come next my SE friends - a razor that I believe to be a 1912 EverReady aka "Shovelhead" or a 1912 Damaskeene?

    OMG!

Forget the description of the shaves for a sec, but the Deacon of DEs, the North American Comrade of the DE Blade Cartel - using Injectors?!!
It's the end of Western Civilization as we know it, dogs sleeping with cats, Donnie and Hillary form a match made in, well I'm not sure, man bites dog…
    I'm telling ya its Armageddon!:angry021:

and then to read the shave descriptions??? :shocked003:
Ya just can't script this stuff! :happy102:

"Well, with the bloody patch of course but that's how we roll...Ended up having to use styptic to stop the bleeding then Nivea to cool things off before reigniting the burn with Clubman. Hey, it's still a great shave and a great way to go into the weekend." :happy097:

Neal just promise me the next time you do this, send me a PM first, I don't want to miss it.
Just proof once again my friends that Shenanigans Never Sleeps with the 30DC.
Popcorn for everyone next time on me!

".....I went over the spot yesterday that the Type E chewed up a bit and......just butchered it again. SWMBO stepped in about that time to ask me something and just started shaking her head as the blood was running from my jawline by the goatee down my neck. I just kept shaving...got a DFS everywhere but the river of blood and started cleaning up. Hit it with alum and said a few words from the incredible sting. Cold compress for a bit, and another round of Alum followed by styptic. Twice. Used two of the styptic matches from the Shaving Factory. That and some more cold water stopped the bleeding. Finished with Clubman and had a great fairly mild reaction except for the bloody patch. That burned like fire.
Not what I had in mind but, I've had worse. The actual shave was, as I said, a very nice DFS"

stop, stop, stop it please, you're killin me here!

What, you only lose a pint of blood with this razor instead of a quart!

I felt the same way with this combo. I did enjoy it with a Chick, but two shaves with the Twin were not so smooth. Maybe a blade change next time as many users swear by that combo.

Thats injectors, just when you feel over-confident and start zipping around with them, a loss of focus and they'll jump up and bite you - especially the ones from G back thru the alphabet.

Like being overconfident with a sports car around a hair pin turn…:scared001:

I vote for the Damaskeene. I have the flat head version, and your razor appears to be the rounded head, but the Damaskeene is such a smooth shaver. That is where I would go next. :happy088:

Vince I thought you might like the Featherweight. I am with Jim on this one. Go with the Damaskeene. It is really a smooth shaver.

The shave this morning was my 200th shave with this Mongoose since getting it in January 2015. I began using it in the first 30 day thread that very month and used it for 50% of my shaves during 2015. While the Mongoose is a large heavy beast, the fact is that with so much use I have fully mastered the razor; good to great shaves are automatic. Repeatedly using the same razor extensively over a period of time allows muscle memory to fully develop and merely revisiting the razor periodically maintains the skill. This muscle memory shortens the mastery of the next razor. In general I need about 10 shaves to dial in a new razor. My journey is really an example of the entire premise and purpose of the 30 day thread.

Just as I anticipated, the 2 pass shave with touch ups was an automatic drama free near BBS all completed in around 10 minutes. This is my definition of the perfect work morning shave. YMMV I finished off the shave with a splash of Fine Platinum. I hope everyone has a great Tuesday.
