What I find most interesting about the ad isn't the 'leatherette' case, just for a shaving stick. It's the mailing. 1) from anywhere in the 'known world' (they get to define that, I guess), you could get one for 25 cents, and 2) They didn't actually have an address. "The J. B. Williams Co., Glastonbury, Connecticut". That's General Delivery, and I don't believe the post office will do that anymore. The Random capitalization of Certain Words is definitely late 19th/early 20th century. (Not totally random. It's German style, where you capitalize nouns)
After reading this post last week. I decided to get the puck of Williams out and give it a whirl. I used a 2 band finest just soaked for a minute. Then shook out the water. Loaded the brush until I got a nice amount and proceeded to face lather. I had to add a bit of water to get it to my liking. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the slickness. It performed well. I now have a new soap in my rotation Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
That is all my dad used when he used soap and a brush. Now he uses goo. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Welcome to the club. Its great to see someone come to enjoy the goodness. I think May will be a full month of Williams. 30 day crew here I come.
Well, I'm going to try a puck of Williams today. I'm about ready to get ready, so hopefully Williams does not disappoint! I'll be sure to try all of the tips that I've heard here. Wish me luck.
Well, I did it! I tried Williams again. This time I liked it. I sprinkled a little water on top of the puck, let it soak while I showered and then took a semogue boar brush to it. I ended up with a rich lather. I really couldn't detect a scent, but I'm getting over a cold right now. It was slick enough for me to use my straight razor. I think I'm hooked! I'm buying a few more pucks later today. This will be perfect when the shavapocolypse happens.
I think that's why they advise us to use Aqua Velva following the soap-not only were they both originally from Williams, but the AV scent really comes out.
I have not tried Williams yet. All the talk about it being dry probably has kept me from doing. I am on a well and have very hard water. Even with a water softener unit the water still is hard. I suppose I should get a puck. There is one grocery store (some distance from me) that carries it. We'll see how it works.
Even with hard water, Williams should lather okay. A recommendation - soak the puck for 5 minutes with hot water the first time you go to use it. After that, the drying lather will help keep things moving along, but if you let it dry for too long (rather than using it all the time), you might have to do the same thing. If not, it's cheap, and you can use it as a hand soap
