I traded for one years ago...didn't like it at all. From what I hear, they are not as smooth as a finely sharpened straight. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I've gotta ask cause I have a shavette on its way from keithmax. Why do you switch hands when using a straight? In my mind I trust my dominant left hand for both sides of my face than trying to do left hand for left side and right hand for right side. Please keep in mind I've never used a straight or shavette and that my first time will be when I receive my CJB from Keith.
Using one hand can cause your hand and arm to get in the way of your seeing what is going on. I use my right hand only with straights and shavettes. You just gotta work through the blind spots.
I actually think using both hands would be easier than one. When starting with the straight, I didn't even consider just using one hand.
I can see me trying both hands eventually, however, it's gonna have to be after I get my technique down. I've just now gotten used to DE shaving and I've told myself no way would I ever use a straight razor. Then I win one in the raffle and look at me now........asking questions in a straight razor forum, lmao.
I use both hands so I use the correct angle with the razor. Some passes it is impossible for me to use my hand and get the correct angle of the blade. There are some people that shave perfectly fine with one hand but I need to use both. Since you have a shavette you can practice without a blade using your offhand and build the muscle memory. Some people disagree with this approach but it worked for me. I thought I would never be able to use both hands but within a month you will be doing it no problem.
I think that's a great idea. Thanks for the advice, gonna need all the help I can get. My face depends on it, lol.
I doubt you will have too much of a problem. The biggest problem I see with most new open blade users is confidence. If you are jerky and hesitant you WILL have issues.
I found the 'bladeless' practice good for building muscle memory in my off hand and when I try to find the proper grip and stroke for a difficult angle. Here are some axioms I found helpful for straights: The first time you shave you will be nervous, which means at minimum micro tremors in your hands which can lead to blood... so.... just shave your cheeks then finish with a DE If you are in a hurry, put down the straight and pick up a DE or other razor. If you might be interrupted by a spouse, child, pet et al. bursting through the door then down the straight and pick up a DE or other razor. If something doesn't feel right or feels uncomfortable put down the straight and pick up a DE or other razor. If it feels like it will cut you, stop, but if shavettes usualy do not give you a warning.
Thanks. This is the kind of info I'm looking for and the reason I love this site. I think that by the time my CJB gets here I'll be confident enough to try without being too nervous. Gonna compare it to cooking good BBQ, slow and steady. Lol
