Well, If you score one let me know, I can probably restore it (massive pile of spare parts Rolls'es ) .
This was my all-time favorite haul for me, found at a local antique shop. The NEW Standard second from the right is a favorite. The Super Speed that belonged to my Great-grandfather is the only razor I like more, but it's not nearly as photogenic.
OK, I am having a hard time narrowing it down, so to cut down on pictures I tried to group razors. Click images for obnoxiously large version. We will start off with my personal favorites. The Tuckaway, Norfolk, Milady family: The Red and Blue Tip Rockets: Entirely Aluminum Rocket, and TV Rocket: Gillette Psycho and box: NOS Sun Up Slim: NOS Vintage Progress: Fisherman's Set: NOS Schick Platinum, Eclipse Red Ring, and Probak: (by request) #66: and the Open Comb Slant: Sorry, that is a lot of pictures, but it is narrowed down from the list I wanted to post.
Lots of nice stuff there Rodd. Really like the Gillette "Psycho". I've got a British Gillette "Psycho". I told my dad it was his to use when he stays with me. Ha!
Thanks! Let's see your updates. I know you have added some beauties to your collection since your OP. Oh, Should have included these, Gillette 4 piece Techs:
Yeah but they've all been posted in the "Haul" threads, didn't really want to recycle them. I do have one coming though that I'm saving to unveil. *evil grin* Edit: If you ever find the rare bakelite holder case thingy that goes with that 4-piece tech in the middle, you'll have one hell of a collectable. I mean, the razor alone is but with that bakelite holder.. wow. Achim had one for sale recently on the German eBay. Don't know if it sold or not. May want to contact him. This set:
Actually, that one is the 4'th 4 piece that I am still looking for. Mine has two bands at the bottom. I can't afford the going price on them though, so I will have to find one hidden in a lot again. I almost got one of those blade banks a couple years back, but someone beat me to it. Oh well, for me, the hunt is the fun part. Post your favorites Jody. Razor porn is razor porn. edit: a Canadian 4 piece sold today. Not a bad price. I bet it will clean up well.
Holy wow! I didn't even notice that lot. And that's not even the rarest piece in that lot. The rarest piece is that 1920s 4-piece Gillette "Vienna" Vest Pocket Model as seen here:
Ha, didn't even notice. I assumed it was one of the Merkur (or a rebrand) 4 piece razors. Speaking of Viennas: Yeah, it isn't the pretiest of razors, but of the 5 OC slants I have had, this one is the best of the shavers. It is gentle on the face, but shaves extremely close. This one is only marked Made in Germany. more images here, here, and here.
Fabulous gold set gregindallas! Can you explain what you mean by 'Series 1' - were there a few of these or???? These gold sets also appear to be very uncommon. Thanx for posting!
I thought maybe a Merkur rebrand too when I first saw it but then read the description where the seller said all 9 razors were Gillette. Very nice Vienna. Is that your web site?
Rhyme or reason to Rolls models? Kidding, right? Rhyme or reason to Rolls models? Kidding, right? Seriously, a series 1 Rolls is the 1st with the new, more rounded cases. They still had the weaker gear tracks, large wheels, a ceramic (?) friction pad, pad-less strop integral blade alinging clips and a thicker honing stone. Series 2's are by far the most common, nickel or silver plating (with an aluminum one thrown in for confusion), heavy duty gear tracks, padding under the strop, thinner stone, replacable alignment tabs, etc.. Series 3's were Series 2's with stainless steel frames. Yep, all Rolls prior to the series 3's had a carbon steel frame and were/are subject to rust. Then there were the best and final Rolls, the Viscount models.....except they ditched the leather strop and replaced it with a piece of cork.
My favorite is my 59 FatBoy that I just got back today from Reliable Electroplating where it had a nice Rhodium bath!
