    My first straight shave

*DISCLAIMER* All you guys that actually know how to straight shave and believe in the right way to do things may cringe at the events that are about to be relayed in the following paragraphs. Not to worry, I'm an accomplished ghetto-rigger and have done far worse things.

I had the day off and was reading through straight shaving threads, and decided to take action. My straight razors are all in deplorable condition, and I keep meaning to send them out to glenn but they never seem to make it there. However, there is one straight I snagged from the grab box that looks like it could maybe possibly who knows let's hope be able to shave something. It's by far the sharpest one I have, although I have no idea when the last time it would have been honed is.

Also, I have no strop. No worries.

I dug around until I found an old leather belt in *decent* shape. Decided to lather up a bowl of Wilkinson, and went at the belt with my VDH brush. After that I brought out the Crawford and ran about 50 laps on the belt, ran the razor across the back of my hand, shrugged, and went to work. First, I did take my Voskhod-loaded SS and do a pass to bring my 2-day growth down, but when I started with the straight, I was pleasantly surprised. I really had no expectations (except maybe hospital) since I had no idea about the razor's history. But this is the best part:

2 passes, DFS, no nicks, cuts, nothing nothing nothing, just cut whiskers on the edge of my blade. Yes, there were a couple spots I couldn't get to and yes, I did have to do a clean up pass with the SS, but all in all, I am very happy with my first venture into straights. And my shavette doesn't count.

so in conclusion, I will get a strop, and I will get my razor honed. Soon. I promise.

    In the meantime this works.

    Another guy goes 'straight way'!

Congrats with the first step into straight shaving! I remember that great feeling when I shaved with a straight for the first time. I have to say, the learning process is one of kind! Each time you shave you know something new, you feel more comfortably, you acts with better skill. I'm still all in learning and I see no way back! So I'm sure there will be more straight shaves in SoS thread soon! Happy shaving!

Right! From all I have, DVH is a gem! My first straight shave was with that soap, so it is very memorable for me. Hope to get more of that nice soap! Thanks again, Jeff!

Razor: MoDoSo Solingen 6/8 rescaled in ebony
    Strop: Ambrose Spanish Horse 25/50
    Brush: Vulfix Grosvenor+Simpson superbadger
Lather: Woods of Windsord, old fórmula with tallow
    AS: B.Kamins Bio Maple Balm
    EdT: Fragonard Cologne Grand Luxe
    .
Summary: Yesterday I touched up this edge, this is not a great razor, but it can shave with efficiency. The soap is one of my favs, and after this great lather. The balm is not a maple syrup, is a fresh balm, with extracts from the maple, it's good but nothing special....but....those canadians can make everything with maple. Fragonard is classy, perfect for daily use.

There are very few blades that can shave me as close and comfortably as the Rapiras. When this blade is finished, it's going to be hard for me to find a good substitute. By the way, the Tamara cream comes from Egypt, and it's excellent. ;) :D

Why not just get some more Rapira blades?

For me, they are very difficult to obtain. Canada rarely has any DE blades as it is, and these Rapira blades are unknown here.
