    TUESDAY
    Back-to-Work Day!
Early morning shave today and as I was prepping my shaving gear (i.e. stropping the razors, filling the sink with cold water, etc), I noticed I had an unexpected visitor perched upon my brush stand. Perhaps he was attracted by the color of the Oscar11 brush handle….

The shave: My first use of this George Wostenholm & Sons "Doubly Carbonized IXL" gold frame back (mid to late 1800s). A really delicate razor I honed yesterday afternoon (finished on a Naniwa 12k). The scales are made of bone and are quite thin. The razor itself shaves exceptionally smooth and noisy as the thin (Sheffield non-hollow ground) blade took a keen edge off the hones. Three passes = a near BBS shave! A joy to use!
    Have a great Tuesday, all!

Kevin, this is so weird. When I went into the bathroom this morning and looked at the mirror a grasshopper was on the mirror looking at me. This is the second one I've had in the house in a week.

    SHAVE OF THE DAY
    sotd46.jpg

    RAZOR: GILLETTE TECH
    BLADE: PERMA-SHARP
    BRUSH: FINE ANGEL HAIR SYNTHETIC
    SOAP: GINGERS GARDEN HAIGHT ASHBURY
POST: CHISELED FACE CINAWOOD BOROKA A/S

Had a great shave this morning. Gingers Garden whips up a nice thick lather with no problem, and the scent is quite strong which is a good thing. Finished with Cinawood Boroka, it has just the right amount of menthol and cools down the skin very well. Hope everyone has a great shave and a great day!!

    Tyr's Day:

Prep: Hot shower, Healthy Accents Daily Renewal Cleanser, TSD Jasmine Sambac preshave balm
    Brush: Simpson 56 Best Badger
Lather: Ginger's Garden Grapefruit Mint soap
    Razor: RazoRock Bamboozled RAKE OC
    Blade: Bic Chrome Platinum (2)
    Passes: WTG, XTG, XTG (4, 5, 6)
Post: Cold water splash, Bloc Osma alum, Dickinson's witch hazel, Pinaud Clubman AS splash
    Cologne: Burberry Brit by Burberry

If I am forced to compare One-X to the Ginger's Garden glycerin soaps (the ones sans mango butter, anyway), I think Ginger's Garden lathers just as easily, provides perhaps a bit more slickness, and perhaps just a touch less post-shave care; the final point is arguable, as I have never paired it with Ginger's Garden aftershave, while the One-X has almost always been paired with its own AS. At some point in my third pass today, the lower corner of the blade ventured below where I'd lathered on my throat, causing a minor bit of red to appear. Otherwise, 3 passes produced comfortable DFS+ results.

Ginger's Garden awareness day! lol. I was trying to decide which soap to use and I remember you saying they don't get enough love around here, so I figured I would use it today. How would you compare the glycerin version to the other ones?

I have not used Irena's tallow croap, personally, though I have gifted it to a friend; as far as I know, he enjoys the product, but his SWMBO prefers him with a beard, so his use of the product is limited. For me, the pucks with mango butter - which, as I understand the labeling, are still glycerin-based and not tallow-based - have a little bit better post-shave skincare, probably making them on par with RazoRock for my skin and preferences.

I'm the complete opposite. Started with face lathering then tried a scuttle and will not go back to face lathering. We all have our preferences which work best with our individual shave techniques.

    The Crazy Ivan in SEptember!
    September 1

    Razor - Gem 1912
Blade - [IMG] Gem Stainless PTFE (1)
    Brush - Vie-Long 12750
    Soap - Tabac
Post - Cold water, Alum, Nivea, The Veg as a body splash

Greetings comrades to a new month! Autumn is just around the corner so it's that wonderful time of year when we debate whether the coming winter in St. Louis will be Siberian cold or Black Sea Coast mild. Either way, we're sure of plenty of bullets falling from the sky to remind us of the season. Yes, life is good.

To open up this month I've chosen to join the SEptember push for the first three days with the classic Gem 1912. I bought the razor late last year but never got around to trying it. SE's haven't really attracted my attention that much. So, I got a Gem Stainless Teflon blade and figured it's time. I chose the horse and Tabac for a fantastic lather, and, after watching a video of the Gem last night, went to work. I was a bit curious how it would be to set the angle but found it very easy to find it and was instantly impressed with the first pass through the right side. Nice feedback with a two day beard and very smooth. Much smoother than I had anticipated. Finished the WTG pass without a problem at all and really enjoyed it. Lathered up for pass two and went XTG. Again, no issues and I was impressed with the finish. My neck was closer than normal and my face was BBS. With the neck, DFS overall. Very nice. Lathered the neck just to experiment. I mean, it isn't Crazy Ivan month without something crazy, right? How about a Gillette Slide with the Gem eh? So, good lather, got my bearings and the only thing I did differently from a normal slide was to keep the angle a bit more vertical. But, it worked great and the neck finished up BBS and this month started off PERFECT!

Splashed the cold water, grabbed the alum and, well ok so maybe not perfect if you count irritation, but not as much burn as I've created with less lethal looking razors. All in all a great shave. Hit the Nivea to cool off and condition, threw the Veg on as a body splash to make me smell awesome and away to my day off we go. Hope you all have a great start too!

image.jpg Razor: Gillette Old Type Open Comb Ball End NDC 1920s (from "The Weekender" by Metalfield kit)
Brush: Rubberset 400 #3 WD 24/50 Silvertip (Jedi Lightsaber)
Mug: Old Spice 1985 Cobalt Blue
    Cream: TOBS Coconut cream
    Blade: Feather (1)
Pre shave: Tree Hut Shea Body wash Mango
Post shave: Thayers Cucumber WH, Jack Black Balm, Old Spice original Shulton 1973 glass AS Stopper #4
The Gillette Old Type OC is a great razor, with some cool history coming from "The Weekender" kit which is very Art Deco. I pay special attention when I use it. It does give me some burn if I use to much pressure and I do not go over an area more than once on each pass. The pre shave Shea Mango soap helps keep my skin slick. The Lightsaber whipped up the TOBS Coconut into a thick lather and I really like the handle on this brush. I screwed in the Feather, and checked the alignment and was good to go for my first pass WTG. A little rinse to see how we are doing and relather for a XTG pass on my face and ATG on my neck. No touch up and we are done. I can feel a little burn, but a very close shave. Warm water rinse and pat dry. Some WH and after cleanup some Jack Black Balm then some Vintage Old Spice original Shulton 1973. Nice shave, to start September.... Where does the time go.....
