Sometimes it seems like there are good shave WEEKS and bad shave weeks-yes whole weeks, no rhyme or reason. I've given up trying to figure out the nuances. Blades that have failed me suddenly give me shaves that, yes, make babies butt's jealous. Blades that have been my go-t0 become like scratching sandpaper across my face. I think the shave gods are like Zeus-they're in a bad mood and we suffer.

    Prep: Shower, glycerin
Razor: Weber head /w BRW handle
    Blade: Voskhod (2)
    Soap: Arko
    Brush: Rudy Vey Omega Boar
Post: Alum, Cold water rinse, WH + Rosewater
AS/ASB: Floid Blue + Cade Balm

Tonight's shave was a night of "firsts". First time to use the Weber and Voskhod blade together, first time to use my RV Boar brush and my first time to use Arko stick.

The Weber and V. were an excellent combo. The brush and Arko....not so much. Maybe because the brush isn't broken in yet or maybe I didn't use enough water or maybe the Arko sucked. Don't know.

I got away with one though. The shave gods should have whacked me, but I got a 3 pass shave with no irritation. I must make a sacrifice. Where's that Williams......

    Jamie.

Well I decided after the last shave to take the Iron Duke back to the stones, right back starting at 1000, on to 5000 then 8000 and finally 12000, finish on my two paddle strops first with a little Chromium Oxide paste mix with a little neatsfoot oil, then the final paddle with a little Dovo paste nothing abrasive, and the biggest compliment i can pay this razor was it actually shaved as well as my Feather Straight razor, the smoothest edge i've seen on this razor sweet. Two pass shave with minor touch up.

Monday I planned to use my old Wilkinson brush this week, but it’s no longer in my possession because yesterday I gave it to my brother-in-law, who had shown interest in DE shaving last time I saw him. It’s a familiar story: he shaves with a trillion blade cartridge razor and cream from a can, and hates every minute of it. I shave with a DE razor (and sometime an injector razor), a brush, soaps and creams, and love every minute of it.
So yesterday I gave him a small, but serious, starter kit: a tube of DVH shaving cream, the Wilkinson brush, a Merkur HD, a travel bottle of Proraso AS and a sample blade kit.

    foto[1].JPG

And then we talked about the basics of DE shaving. No pressure, how to load a blade in the razor, no pressure, the different ways of lathering, no pressure, blade angle, no pressure, start with short strokes, no pressure, lock your wrist, no pressure, WTG-XTG-ATG. Did I mention no pressure?
He very much liked the hefty feel of the razor in his hand. He is a tall and well-trained man; it's a shame that modern marketing tells big guys like him to shave with a plastic toy.
The brush and cream will be tested tomorrow morning, his first shave with the Merkur will probably be on Saturday. So perhaps this daily routine that he hates so much will soon turn into an enjoyable one.

    Thanks.
It's more or less the kit I used when I started DE shaving. The brush and DVH soap I already used, the Merkur was my first DE razor and the Proraso came very quick into the den too. Techs are also good starter razors, but my brother-in-law has a heavy and course beard, so he needs a little more aggression in the razor. Just hope he likes it...
