After 40+ years of electric razors, cans of goo and carts I experienced my first wet / DE shave!

All the gear came from the Vintage Razor Starter Package ($40.) from Garry’s Sample Shop.
Succinctly put, I believe this provided a great start down this new path.

Overall today was an excellent first shave! Performed the 3-pass shave. (Disclosure: I sport a mustache and goatee, so I'm spared most of the tough shaving angles while I learn technique.) My only nicks came when my mind wandered from my technique (bad cart habits over many years).

Razor / blade: combo worked well for me as I used my hearing as much as anything else to determine best blade angle.

Brush/Soap: I really like this brush, feels good in the hand, like the length. I can’t assess the soap all that well because I think my lathering technique requires almost as much work as my shaving technique. I also need to work on soap v. water proportions...though I think it was mostly my impatience in wanting to get to the shave. (again, another cart/goo bad habit.)

Aftershave: I have an aversion to heavy, strong smells, so I substituted a sample of Proraso white cream aftershave for the Pinaud Musk / Special Reserve that was supplied with the kit. Four hours after my shave and my skin (and nose) is still thanking me.

Technique will obviously be my focus for the coming months. I’ll start by trying out various sample blades over the next few weeks and potentially various soaps / creams and stick with the same razor. From that I will choose one blade and one shaving soap/cream to start a 30-day rule process. I’m choosing this method from all the info I’ve gathered on this site (thanks to all contributors!) in order to accomplish my top goal - establishing solid technique and shaving habits. (Carts and electric razors made me soooo lazy!)

The TOBS Lavender Shaving Cream face-lathered well with my Jayaruh WC1 Silvertip Badger brush. Two passes with my Schick J-2 razor and a Personna Stainless blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse, alum block, and a final cold water rinse, I finished off with Thayers Rose Petal WH and then Barbasol Brisk after shave. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

Gold Bond Moisturizer

Aramis EdT

Another great Stirling shave which is planned, with a really wonderful soap. The Black Ice doesn't have anywhere near as powerful a menthol sensation as its "cousin" which is the Glacial Obsidian, but it's still a very chilly soap with a very similar anise scent which I love. It gives wonderful lather which is so easy to whip up, and the post-shave care is excellent. As I keep on saying - it's very hard to top the Gold Bond moisturizer for additional cooling and care, as well as soothing. The Barbon aftershave is another face-freezer which I'm running out of, and damn it - there are no Canadian sources for it. Ah well, c'est la vie!

Post: Witch Hazel, Nivea Sensitive Balm
Scent: Tommy Bahama Very Cool

Good 2 pass WTG & ATG shave. Should've waited another day on the ATG, irritated pretty bad on my neck. Either my technique with the G1 isn't there yet or I have a little sensitivity to the blade. Probably my technique.

Ymmv, but the trick to irritation free shaves on an injector is to keep the blade angle shallow, like 20 degrees, and use very deliberate short strokes.

I found the same thing using the Futur. Dialing it down to 2.0 made a big differance (for the good).

It's working great! I especially like the design. The brush handle doesn't contact the side of the bowl.

What can I say? Australia Post arrived this morning with a package from a friend in the US. @maltedmilk . Contained a MMOC, a mint Ever Ready 1924, a 1912 and a Schick Type L injector. I am speechless.

So many choices and so little face! . I selected the 1924 and after putting in a new GEM SS blade I had the most sensational shave. I altered my prep a bit this morning.
Created my lather in the scuttle with #4 of my homebrew shaving soap. I lathered up but instead of shaving I massaged the lather into my stubble for about 1 - 2 minutes and then towelled it off and re lathered from the scuttle for the first pass. Cold face shower rinse and on to the second and final pass.
Finished off with a cold face shower and a splash of Witch hazel.
No cuts, no weepers and no irritation. BBS in 2 passes.
The 1924 is amazing.
