SOTD WEDNESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 10, 2021

It was definitely time for a vintage straight razor shave. I do love my Japanese razors, and decided to shave with my first Japanese razor acquisition. My son has a huge collection of Japanese razors, and he made mu aware of this Tanifuji Airi which he termed a steal. After a bit more urging on his part, I bought it, and boy am I glad I did. Ben insisted on running it through his jnats, and it really shaved well. Over the years, I’ve been maintaining it first on my jasper, and most recently on my 9 Ball Slate which imparts an edge every bit as good. Two and a half passes with some final flatblading easily put the baby to bed.

One of my favorite vintage noggin shavers is my Eclipse Red Ring which I shaved with just a few days ago. Prices for the Eclipse have hit the stratosphere compared to what I paid for mine. About two or three years ago Classic Shaving offered an incredible safety razor deal in their Occam’s DE razor. It came with three plates, two top caps and a case for just under $60. I originally bought it as a Christmas present for my then oldest grandson, but after a shave with its aggressive plate decided to keep it and bought another at the same price for him. The aggressive plate on this DE shaves very similarly to my Eclipse which is consistently excellent. My two pass ATG noggin shave this morning was in keeping with that assessment and left your happy narrator velveteen smooth from shoulders to dome and smelling of Lilac in my sweet bride’s absence.

RAZOR: Tanifuji Airi 11/16 (Mug), Classic Shaving Occam’s DE (Dome)
    BLADE: Feather DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Alpha Shaving T-400 with 26mm Boar Ferrule
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Pinaud Lilac Vegetal.

Brush: Yaqi 24mm Naples Tuxedo Synthetic.
    Bowl Lather.
Bowl: Home Bargains Stainless Steel Side Bowl.
Lather : The Body Shop Maca Root Shave Cream.
Blade: Indian Gillette 7'oClock SP. (D4)
    Razor: Parker 98r.

    Post:
Cold water face wash with brush squeezings, Cold Water Face Rinse./ Homemade (~Autumn/Winter mix~) peppermint lavender, eucalyptus, + Tea Tree essential Oils Mixed Together With 200ml of Care+Witch Hazel./Brut ASL./Wilko Fruits Coconut & Vanilla Body Butter.

    Greetings,

    Early morning shave,

The body shop maca root cream is such an incredible great value for money shave cream...I have enough cream for one more shave then the tub will be empty.. This is the original tub i purchased which i have had well over 2.5 years but it's still perfectly ok to use it's slightly dis-coloured but hasn't have any adverse affect on the lather or to my skin... It's always provided me with a superb slick protective lather....People have a love/hate opinion on it's scent, which doesn't get top marks from me either, but it's residual slickness protection ,shaving performance, & post shave feel are absolutely superb.

Another enjoyable 2 pass + pick ups close comfortable shave with no errors to report...Finishing the shave off with a small dollop of Wilko Fruits Coconut & Vanilla Body Butter.

My face is feeling smooth cool, & smelling divine.;)

Keep safe, and enjoy your day ladies & gentlemen.

SOTD THURSDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 11, 2021

Well, after yesterday’s great shave with the Tanifuji Airi, I decided it was time for a shave with the marvelously designed Saito SK3 7/8. Ryiuchi Saito had been the barber for the Emperor of Japan. In 1950 he established the “Saito Kai”, the first professional association/school under his name. Campuses were started all over Japan, and his name became associated with Japanese fashion. His razor designs were prized by big companies such as Diamond Hayashi and Kikuboshi and razors were distributed under his name. His most famous designs weren’t the Kikuboshi SK series, but rather the Diamond Hayashi Ribbon/ Rosette 40 and 80 models made for his Barber students and designed to be easy to use.

The thing I love about this little Saito SK3 razor is it’s remarkable edge. It feels really good in hand and is a pleasure to use. After my shower, the LE MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handle Hybrid knot #007 which had been soaking in warm water generated the initial thinner, slicker MWF lather I like for my mug shaves. A refreshing cold water rinse followed by Argan Oil set the stage for a superb two and a half pass mug shave for the record books. We always recommend to new straight shavers that they imagine themselves lightly sweeping away the lather, and that’s exactly what this shave felt like, leaving my mug oh-so-smooth.

After that great mug shave, I generated the thicker, more yogurty lather necessary for a great noggin shave. The tool of choice this morning was my Rex Ambassador. I had the pleasure of meeting its designer, Matt Pisarcik, and his lovely wife two years ago at the Shave Collectibles Meeting in West Chester, Ohio. Matt is an acknowledged Gillette razor historian with a large personal collection in addition to being the proprietor of Razor Emporium and Rex Supply. Following that get together, I purchased the Rex Ambassador I used this morning. It delivered its regular, excellent, two pass ATG dome shave leaving me velveteen smooth from noggin to shoulders.

RAZOR: Saito SK3 7/8 (Mug), Rex Ambassador (Dome)
    BLADE: Feather DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE LE Knurled Aluminum Handle Hybrid Knot #007
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Fine Platinum AS Splash.

The Col. Conk Amber Shave Soap lathered well with the Oscar11 Synthetic Brush. Two passes and touch ups with the GEM-LP Razor with a Personna GEM SS PTFE Blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse I finished off with Aqua Velva Musk AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

    Thursday morning’s Grand Freeze:

    Stirling Mentholated Pre Shave Soap
    Yaqi 30mm Barber Pole
    Super Speed/Minora day 2
    MSC Peppermint Latte SS
    Prep ASB
    MSC Peppermint Latte AS Splash

Man oh man is my face ever frozen - not so much from the Peppermint Latte soap, although it does give a pretty strong menthol sensation but from the matching aftershave. The soap lathers like a dream, it has such a beautiful coffee/peppermint scent, hence the name, I would rate it an 8/10 on my personal Menthol Scale, and the postshave feeling is wonderful. The Prep felt so moisturizing, cooling, and soothing, while the Peppermint Latte aftershave is witch hazel based, it smells as beautiful as the soap, and the freeze it gives is off the charts but it leaves the skin feeling so relaxed and comfortable. What a brilliant BBS shave this was!

Enjoy your day and your shaves - be well and safe!

    Superb shave
I tried using the CBD cream as a preshave and I think it works great. It is a brushless cream, so a thin layer is all I needed. Leviathan yielded thick lather and the razor glide was smooth and easy.
