Well put my friend, I'm not there yet but I will get there eventually. I always do. In the meantime I'm going nice and slow, taking my time and absorbing the techniques that I hope will become second nature at some point. Myself I respect and enjoy advice from the more seasoned members here. I'm amazed that I have have made it to the point where straight razor shaving is a possibility not just something I read about. Early days for sure!
I just watched an Italian barber strop the razor and the right before he took it to his customers face, stropped it on the fleshy part of his hand. He said this was very important!
Nice video! I always strop after a shave to dry the edge and make sure it's clean. To save time I do my -preshave stropping in the evening for my morning shave.
I notice there is only a slight give in the leather while he is stropping rather than the strop actually curving. I've been trying to do it this way, since I watched the video. I think initially I was pressing much too hard and making the strop curve much more.
Is stropping paste to keep the leather strop supple or is it something to do with keeping the razor's edge sharp? Thanks. Do I need paste?
Stropping paste(Chromium Oxide) is used for helping put a finer edge on a blade, after honing. Usually it's put on a linen strop, at least I do. There is stropping paste (yellow tube) out there that has no abrasive quality in it. I don't use it. To condition the leather, I use Neatsfoot oil.
