I have used styptics but hated the white residue so I bought a "Father's love" alum and use that one whenever I get a nick. Works mighty fine and I won't try anything else any more
used both, I don't like white residue, so I prefer alum. You can probably get it cheap locally. Actually GNC carries it for cheap, but it is sold as a deodorant. This is the same stuff though http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2439402&cp=2167369.2591523.2109091&parentPage=family
follow up questions So, in addition to GNC, where would be a good place to order an alum block? What would be a reasonable amount to spend on one?
Lee's Razors sells Trumper's Alum Block, it is a pretty big block at 110g for around 15 bucks. Here is quick link: http://www.leesrazors.com/aftershave.htm
http://www.shavex.com/e-shop.htm - they're supposed to be a reliable company, and their 250g-offer should last you "a while"
Alum for pleasure, My Nik Is Sealed for nicks. Neither stings to any great degree. If you get an alum block, go for potash (potassium) alum, rather than ammonium alum---the later stings more. You can use one of the crystal deodorants, which sometimes are cheaper, but make sure you get potash alum when you do. One guy checked various brands at his local store and found only one brand (of several) that was potash alum. My Nik Is Sealed is great: it's a liquid, and uses a little roll-on applicator. I've mostly had to use it when I try a blade that's "touchy" for me: very sharp, but inclined toward spontaneous nicks. Two that work that way for me: Feather and Tiger. Very sharp, but unpredictable. YMMV
