I don't use any aftermarket parts currently for smoking with my Weber kettle grill. It's really fairly easy to set up for indirect cooking with a water pan. But having said that, I've been eying the Smokenator and it's on my short list to buy. It is highly recommended on the website I linked with my rub recipe
That is true. But I live in an apartment and I usually barbecue in a park near me. But it's still a couple of hundred meters. I Can't carry that there, leave it and go back for all the food and stuff. It's very impractical =/ I don't have a yard I can keep it out and covered or something like that
Weber also makes an 18" version that is noticeably smaller than the 22", but that may still be too large for running to the park for a cook out. I have one of these, a Lodge Sportsman's cast iron hibachi style grill. I cook with it some at home, but it's most frequent use is trips to the lake or wherever we want a portable grill. The cast iron is heavy and retains heat very well for cooking a second round of burgers or whatever. That can be a bit of a disadvantage, in that after you've appropriately disposed of any live charcoal, it still takes a bit to cool down, but that has never been a problem for us, since when we take it we're not going to cook, eat, and run right home. And if you have any experience with cast iron, it has superb cooking qualities. Since space and portability are at a premium, this might be worthy of consideration. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00022OK2A/?tag=thshde-20 Edit: just noticed the price at this listing, they are available for much less than what you see here. I've had mine for a couple of years, and at the time the going rate was a little under $100. Just do a little searching if this interests you at all.
Hey thanks for the tips and advice I really appreciate it. Most of my questions and interest is mostly for the future. I wanna have a nice barbecue station with some smoking gear. We'll see how exclusive gear I will afford too but grilling has always been an interest of mine and you know... Eating the food is great too hahaha. That grill you showed me seems very good and without having used one I get how it would hold the heat very well. It could be an option for a portable grill. Right now I use 2 different grills. One is a picnick grill and the other is a liiiittle bigger. They are good for me because it's usually just me and my girlfriend. The bigger one works for 3-4 people too actually. But it's a little cheap looking and feeling.
When I was first learning to smoke using my Weber kettle I used that Amazing Ribs site like a BBQ bible. It really helped this newb. Liked the site so much I joined their club. Then their monthly give away made me the winner of a skookum Napolean charcoal grill in February 2015! http://amazingribs.com/pitmaster_club/giveaways.html Three months later I win the Monthly Newbie drawing here! Lucky, blessed, all of the above. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket?!
I've purchased the Smokenator. It's a good system, especially if you have the hinged grill so you can drop coals in as you need during the smoke. But if you've constructed your own indirect system for your weber, you may not need it.
