One her travels to the UK my sister bought me TOBS Sandalwood shaving soap. I shaved with it for the first time this morning. Have to add the UK to my list. The shave was excellent and the subtle scent is really nice.
Sometimes, you get tricked by the actual location-for instance, Maggard's London Barber soap was made here in USA.
This is surprising. Just got some tobs while in my Oxford and find it underwhelming at best. Ymmv etc. Best I've used from the UK for a D.R. Harris and I'd give that a B- rating. In fact I think I'd probably rank UK dead last.
I find the scent pleasant and it performs well. It’s one that I will use from time to time. It’s not my favourite soap. Of the hard soaps I own, Tabac and MdC are dueling for top spot. SV is in third followed by TOBS.
Thanks for reminding me. I was only thinking in terms of hard soaps. My favourite soft soaps are made by Southern Witchcrafts in Tucker GA! paul
I think Italy is a good first choice. 2nd place is tough because there aren't a lot of really good mass-produced soaps left anywhere else. DR Harris is about the only good English soap left. French soaps - never hit it off with PdP. I liked L'Occitane Cade but I haven't tried the new reformulation and hear it's gone downhill. Germany used to make some great stuff but it's all been discontinued or reformulated for the worse. The stuff I use most these days is American artisan stuff. The good stuff is really good so I could probably vote the US for #2.
Very little in the way of unscented these days, and as i have my allergies im limited. Yeah Erasmic had a scent, but it was mild and dissapated like a fart in a hurricane. Cella has a scent that isnt bad in strength but teh longer i used it the more it bothers me. And the more it lingers in the bathroom.
If you’re talking about triple milled soaps, that’s correct, however there are a number of high quality unscented soaps available. I know I’m missing more than I can recite, but just to name a few; From France: Martin de Candre, Le Pere Lucien, La Savonniere du Moulin; USA artisans Shannon’s, Mike’s Natural, Mystic Water… the list is way more extensive with other artisans from North America and Europe. The next one on my list to try is the Shave Den soap. I’m intrigued…
Well, I received a number of soaps from Areffa in Ukraine and have been using them both with boar and synths and bowl lathering...they are uniformly EXCELLENT!
I was recently PIFEed a soap from Ukraine, not sure who makes it. Don't think it's Areffa. I like it though.
With Italy seeming to hold the #1 spot, based on the stated criteria....if you were headed to Italy, likely next May for a week+ bike tour of Sardinia, what would you look for to bring home????
there have been some reformulations happening recently.. https://www.theshavingroom.co.uk/community/threads/bluffers-guide-to-british-triple-milled.59374/
Saponifico Verisino shave soap, and probably one of their permanent soap containers that they sell on the Euro version of the website, but not on the U.S. version, or anything else they sell. I'd also keep an eye out for nice pipes, same as I would if I were in Denmark.
Thanks for the thoughts. I'll definitely look for the soap and container.... likely pass on the pipe however
