I picked up another straight razor today at an antique shop and just got home with it. They even had a stone which is supposed to be 8,000 grit and I also bought that. I think I got it at a fair price as I paid $30 for both. The razor is a Charles Adams and the scales appear to be bone. The blade and scales seem to be in great shape. I don't know anything about the manufacturer, other than they existed way back when. Does anyone have any knowledge about Charles Adams? Im going to try and hone it. Wish me luck.
So I was showing my wife my new razor when I noticed that the razor is a Coles razor yet the box is Hoffritz. I'm asking the seller if these two were actually a set. Anyone know if Coles and Hoffritz have any affiliation?
My dad found these 4 razors at a garage sale for $10 for all 4. It looks like a red tip, old type, black beauty, and either a fat boy, or a slim. Not sure what one it is. Also picked up a few things from Maggards: Godrej menthol cream Old Spice Musk cream Captain choice North soap Maggards 24mm synthetic Brush Samples: Soap Smooth fougere, DD Tiamat, DD Kringle, and Speick Man soap.
Looks like a fatboy to me...does you dad need my address for shipment? LOL Great finds...I hope they clean up nice and get some good use.
Thanks. I just shaved with the fat boy and got a great shave. I couldn't wait, so I did a quick cleaning so I could try it out. First shave with adjustable.
Great find! If you plan on polishing them up, use MAAS. But be careful. It will take the the paint off of the numbers and red tip. Also, it will remove gold plating. I just found that out.. :-/
Congrats! You're gonna love the Black Beauty, wonderfully smooth shaver! Get's under the nose easy too.
I usually use Simichrome, but it is time consuming, but it amazes me how black the rag will be after cleaning.
Thanks Robby. I tried the Fatboy today, and I did happen to nick my nose which is funny you mentioned that.
I received a gift for a shave box subscription this past Christmas. This should be my penultimate box. Pretty good selection in there today! It can be hit or miss. Hoffritz made all of the Coles branded razors. Usually the cases and razors matched, but it's not unheard of. Usually mismatches are a Coles box with a Hoffritz branded razor, not the other way around. Hoffritz made razors for other department stores as well. I don't see any cause for concern over this issue. Edit: correction. Hoffritz had razors made for them by Merkur. Merkur also made razors for Coles, Pomco, Adams, Grafco, Lunawerk, Weck and several other companies.
