It has been very strange not having multiple packages coming in with razors, blades and other accessories for the past month but it has given me time to appreciate what I have acquired and pass a couple of duplicates off to people who would value them. Sad to say that I fell off the wagon today and made a shaving mug buy on the bay that was motivated by price. It looks to be a lovely mug and I can't wait to add it to my wall when it arrives but I just couldn't let this one get away.
I felt the disturbance in the force and am hoping that the pile on my floor today can mitigate some of that.
So, I've been telling a coworker about me using vintage DE razors and he comments that he has an old razor somewhere at home. He tells me he will give it to me if he can find it and that it belonged to someone in his family. Well, he brings it in today and it's a 1959 Fatboy in awesome condition! I will see if I can post some pictures of it later. I'll have to buy him coffee tomorrow so we can call it "even".
Ha! That seems to be the going 'rate' for coworker/friends. I gave a friend a Gillette Slim and got a coffee as thanks
Well, it still needs a cleaning and polishing. But, now that I look at it some more, maybe I'll spring for a donut along with the coffee.
Another two Frenchies arrived today; 1) A Le Coq Mechanically very sound - needs some TLC as far as cleaning goes though. Maybe a re-plate candidate. For $19 I think I did rather well. 2) A Leresche #77 There are not that many razors I would pay $85 for - but the chance to score a #77 made me do just that. This is one razor I have really wanted to get my hands on. This one will be re-plated. It's mechanically sound but does suffer from plating loss that should be easy to take care of.
so here is a question that i dont need to ask, but still am...i saw a vintage rubberset boar brush brand new in the box for $14, is it worth it?....i will probably never use it, but if some see that as a big thing i will PIF it...it is the one with a cream and red handle?
Found a boxed bottle of Gillette Cool Wave a/s. Had not heard of this stuff before but on clearance for $2.99, figured it was worth the experiment. Chunky glass is nice. Scent is different -- not, as I expected, the usual boring aqueous stuff that's so common -- but still not sure if I dig it enough to go back and get the last bottle.
A vintage straight razor…I do enjoy those razors made by Carl Monkhouse (C-Mon) & the Brooklyn-based Peter J. Michels, Inc. Michels was the sole US distributor of C-MON products, and continued to be after Carl Monkhouse moved to the US in 1937; Peter J. Michels, Inc. closed its doors in 1955. C-Mon Cadillac, 5/8" stainless; 3-pin transparent scales. Some of these older models have the fancy metal lower bolsters. There's a company today making and selling the 'C-Mon Cadillac'—but the majority of the reviews I've read of these new razors are negative.
For $2.99 get it. If you don't buy it and end up liking it you will be kicking yourself. If you end up not liking it it is a pretty good PIF, either way you win.
