The local Family Dollar is going out of business. All shaving stuff is 30% off but they never had anything I wanted (DG has a better selection, imo). I grabbed the last 2 ten-packs of Atra/Trac II Dorcos for $1.40 each. The DE blades were already gone, interestingly enough. Everything else looked the way it always does...unsold. And on the way home, a yard sale had a small leather Dorco shave kit...two of the same Atra type carts and a cheap plastic Dorco stamped handle with chrome trim, scissors, clippers, etc. Looks unused. I don't need it but for fifty cents, why not.
This is my birthday haul, so it's actually a late-April haul that spilled over into May. First up: This fat boy finally got a Fat Boy! A 1960 in excellent shape. I'm taking it for a test drive tomorrow morning, and I can't wait. I found the next four at two nearby antique stores on Friday. I usually don't find anything at these two stores. First is a Gillette Aristocrat (no date code) with the blade box and display box. There's a lot of plating loss on the razor, but no pitting or tarnish, and it opens and closes smoothly. The kicker? Only $10! If I like the way it shaves, I may have it replated. Even as-is, it's a beautiful piece. Next, a Bar Handle Gillette NEW Open Comb (no date code). It cleaned up well. Finally, a '66 Gillette Travel Tech, and a '52 Super Speed. I already have a NOS '66 Travel Tech, so this one gives me one to actually shave with. All in all, a pretty good birthday haul.
Yesterday was an an antique show in a town about 20 miles away. I picked up a fat handled Tech with no date code, an F-2 ball handled Tech, and two vintage packages of razors, one of them a Gillette Blue. Cleaned them up last night. Some plating loss on the fat handle, one or two small spots on the ball handle. I plan on trying the ball handle sometime later in the week.
A "small" group buy from Martin de Candre just arrived: Along with a few more Coate's creams: Cheers.
Hi Friends, @Stroker asked me to show some pics of my first "quality made straight razor". So...here it is...and i am soooo proud... It´s an "Koraat 8/8". Very heavy and in my eyes, absolutely wonderful. Here some pics: It came in this Box with the Initials of Koraat Knifes...KK the box has opened...isn´t that georgeous?! ...don´t be mad at me because the oil is still everywhere... I deeply love the colour of the wood...oh my god... Simple but very beautiful!!! Just BIG!!! and at last, a comparison between my 5/8 "Wade and Butcher Medium Size Hollow Ground" and my "Koraat 8/8"...the Koraat Straight is huge... Can´t wait to use it for my first shave ever with a straight razor on sunday...so stay tuned. Greetings Thorsten
I bought a 1967 Slim Adjustable on an auction site the other day for just under 30$. The razor was extremely dirty and grimey, so we'll see how it cleans up. But I like the leather case and the other accessories. I have quite a few of these now. If the razor comes out good I'll post after photos of it.
Beautiful razor, Thorsten! Enjoy! Just be mindful of that square point! It will remind you of it's presence if you are not careful!
Thank you Kevin. I love it!!! Yeah, you´re right...i have to look for it when i shave. I will shave very slow and carefully on sunday. Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate that. If anyone of you want to have the adress (some of you might not know him), here the adress: http://www.koraat-knives.at/ Koraat Knives are produced in Austria. Ulrik is a really fine guy who answeres really quick and is very helpfull to answer your questions.
The now replaced C&E Nomad: And a couple of soaps from Jim @ WSO: I also managed to find a tube of the old AdP shaving cream, brand new: Cheers.
Just had to stop today at a little Antique / Grocery Store. NOS English Leather, Avon Shaving Brush Cologne full (Wild Country), Old Spice Canadian #1 Mug, Simms #55 Brush (Synthetic Bristle), Ever Ready 1912???, Vintage Williams Mug Soap.
A co-worker gave me a Gillette Tech yesterday. It is a ball end version with the triangle cutouts. Used it today. Worked.
I found a backup Rocket HD in a case! It was a gamble cause of the picture quality, but it's a great one. Just needs cleanage.
eBay netted me a Gillette Super Speed today. Also went to a strip mall converted to antique shops, picked up a very good condition Schick Korona that's currently in the dishwasher after a good soak and scrubbing. I'm thinking it may get tested out in the morning.
I found some old stock blades in a military supply store. They were actually left overs from previous shipments. So I bought these 70 blades for 2 bucks. Personnas don't have any sticky paper, they were already opened. The rest are fine, unopened. I'll sterilize and use them.
