As a descriptor, it does neatly differentiate between the visually impaired and the truly blind, much the same way one might differentiate between, say, someone who is profoundly deaf, versus hearing impaired. I fall into the latter category. I have a disability, but that doesn't exactly make me a disabled person.
Let's hope it's only temporary. TSD and TSN were about the only forums checked. And then there was one. - Bax
Bullgoose shaving supplies just got nailed with a similar law suit on another forum I frequent. He explained the same issues, I wonder if the person suing random company's realizes how many shaving products a small on line supplier would have to sell to even pay the fine. Desperate people will do terrible things to make a dollar on the backs of honest companies. Maybe a few companies can get together to help one another with lawsuits?
I have to agree. Bullgoose would hammer anyone who stepped out of line. I made a comment on the engraving on one of their LEs and got suspended. Kinda reminded me of the soup nazi on Seinfeld. "No soup for you".
They have way bigger fish to fry than piddling little shaving forums. Besides, it wouldn't be a good look for them if the publicity went viral.
I thought the shave nook was a friendly happy place, and I always got good information there. Also met some awesome folks in the hobby there. I sure HOPE they come back! - Bax
It was a friendly happy place in the same way that Russia or China is a friendly happy place... As long as you don't criticize the gov't. As for the people, I hope they find new homes at other forums. Sometimes events like this completely kill any desire to continue participating in a hobby, and that would be the true tragedy. As for Bullgoose, they have advanced the hobby and made some wonderful products, but I can't help but think there's a little bit of karma involved as well. I never got banned from there, but I know a lot of good people who were.
I agree with your assessment. Criticizing it after the fact does nothing. It gave many of us an excellent introduction to our hobby. Privately owned websites can dictate their own rules.
fitting end .. i learned a little there,no issues, but i didn't purchase their products either. it would cement their rep as a greedy, ruthless corporation run by empty suits who are only interested in shareholder profits at any cost.did i say that at loud....must be the Carlin in me..
I didn't know it was run by bull goose shaving until it was shut down. That doesn't matter to me anyway. I never felt any hostility of any kind there, nor any overbearing tyrannical management. It just seemed like a happy friendly place. Everybody's perceptions are different I guess. - Bax
If say, hypothetically, you saw Bullgoose had a sale, and mentioned that you'd seen the same product elsewhere, cheaper, you would definitely have a different perception of "happy friendly." Edit: IIRC, @Darkbulb was perma-banned from that forum for exactly that reason, with no warning whatsoever. He also didn't know it was run by Bullgoose Shaving until after the fact. In that sort of situation, it's rather like strolling through a minefield. As long as you don't step on one, you'll have a wonderful time.
A similar group targeted apartment complexes years ago. Three apartment complexes I know of were targeted and forced to either make very expensive modifications to their pools or remove them. Of course, the "whistleblowers" would not go away unless they got paid off. My girlfriend at the time lived at one of those places, and was way beyond livid at what went down. My take is that such conduct is corrosive and very harmful to society as a whole. Businesses = money, not-for-profit forums = little if any money. It stands to reason that they will go where the money in order to maximize profit. Karma bites hard. I think that the proprietor of The Shave Nook got what he deserved. What went down there a few years ago was really rotten and underhanded. Afterwards, I never went back and never bought anything from Bullgoose again. It still does not justify the way in which TSN was forced to shut down. That was equally bad. The former TSN members can come over to The Shave Den and be in a much better place! I do hope some of them find their way here.
Just because a forum, government, or individual CAN do something doesn't mean they should. That being said, The Shave Nook was a very happy, vibrant place in the beginning.
There is no limit to what government will do when the people don't know, just because it can. And, more often now, even when the people do know.
