Union B.S. Co. Baltimore Md. "The Blacky" Germany 11/16th Extra Hollow Ground I liked the potential of this one, and the silver inlay in the scales was unusual. It cleaned up nicely, after some major polishing, as well as some repair work to the box, with Gaffers Tape. This one still had the factory edge on it, and hasn't touched a stone. The bluing, on the spine, was unworn. This razor has one of the thinnest grinds out there. I'm looking forward to honing it.
7 day Heljestrand set from the estate of Otto Kerner Jr. The razors are cool on their own, but the owner’s history was, shall we say, interesting. He was an Army officer in WWII, Governor of Illinois in the 60’s, Federal judge after that, convicted while on the bench and went to prison for “mail fraud.” There may have been some bribery… but hey, who doesn’t. I saw this at the same time of a 7 day Henckels set a few years ago, but I chose to go after this one. The razors and scales are all in like new condition. No stamping on the backside, box from Abercrombie & Fitch, NY, and they all have the monogrammed scales… and they are very nice scales. I’m betting some will just need some stropping, and I need to get off my butt and take these for a spin. Happy hunting. Tom
An Illinois governor who ended up in jail - who’d have imagined that Did you buy these recently or a few years ago - and if a few years ago, glad you finally got them out What a great set - congratulations
Interesting history on them. I might be tempted to have the Monograms removed, unless you are a collector of crooked politician memorabilia. I think most people that remember him in office are probably long gone.
Thank you Hans. I was thinking either a No.7 or 4... a great 5/8 full hollow. Thank you Karl. It was purchased in Feb 2019... I remember taking a picture but never posted. And the Illinois governor stereotype lives on with this set. Very true, but it was an interesting read. Thanks Gary! History is definitely a cool part of this hobby.
Hi Tom, It is some kind of hybrid, absolutely a No.4 in the middle of the picture. But the scales are more like the MK No.31 to the left. No. 7 to the right. Regards Hans Skickat från min iPhone med Tapatalk
I was lucky enough to source a NOS Le Grelot 14 round nose, and it arrived today. A little metal polish just to clean off any oxidation (there was very little if any), a coat of Renaissance Wax, and off to the hones. Bevel set was with a Shapton Glass 4k HR, followed by a Shapton Glass 8k HC and a a favorite JNat and tomo nagura. I am looking forward to the shave tomorrow.
I feel a little like Billy (@Billyfergie) today with the NOS big German arrival. Looks to be a factory fresh Rudolf Schmidt Bambola 102. The 102 is 7/8”+ and looks to be Solingen made for the Italian market. This will be a fun one to use. Happy hunting. Tom
ERN Wald Germany. First 7/8” razor that I won yesterday evening for $45 freight included. Some polishing and honing. Skickat från min iPhone med Tapatalk
