I was told that English (or American English) is the language of only 50-60% of the Statians. And that in Canada they speak French and English (depending on the location in Canada). And don't forget that "Yankees" derives from the Dutch "Jan Kees" (John Cornelius)! When New York still was called New Amsterdam (for it was a Dutch settlement once), Jan and Kees were popular names, so the inhabitants of New Amsterdam were nicknamed "Jan-Kees". The name stuck to the inhabitants after the settlement was taken over by the English government and the name was changed to New York. Aaaaaand... we're back at Dutch! (oh, these Dutch! Terrible people. You find them and their past everywhere accross the globe. Darn know-it-alls!) Oh... Wait...
I do enjoy Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine—but as noted in the video clip above it has nothing to do with what the Dutch eat— Het is allemaal Duits eten!
We speak Texan, here in Texas, y'all. I don't know where you got the statistics on English in the U.S. but it's wrong. The last stat I saw was 87% speak English, counting illegals.
The bottom half if this sign is in Welsh. The English translation reads 'I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated...'
