My only important advice is use a SUPER light touch, when using. Let the razor do all of the work. Start with the spring to your face and lower slightly until you get the blade to cut. You are there, you can vary slightly from there. Most of all have fun. Tom
So, I'll say this right up front... I paid little attention to this thread before receiving this razor. I like discovering things for myself and not being biased by previous user's experiences. So that is to say, I may be saying some things, or asking questions that have been well covered before. So, first of all, my initial impression was that the razor was smaller than expected. I had only seen pics of the razor by itself before, and I guess I just figured it was about the size of a Personna or Pal metal injector razor. So even though it's bigger than a Type E, I was expecting it to be even bigger. No critique, just observation. I went to load the razor, and when I did, I discovered that I had pushed out a blade that was already loaded. I was kinda freaked out by that. I went back and read the initial post to discover this: Then I saw this: So I'm kinda confused. A) Why does it need to be shipped with a blade in it? and B) If it has a new blade in it, why are we wasting that blade, just to put a new one in? I think it's kind of a hazard to receive it with a blade in it. I wasn't expecting it to have a blade in it, and never realized it had a blade as I was checking it out and stuff. Last question for now, before I talk about my shave, later when I can post a pic..... what is the difference between the guards? I stacked all three together, and looked at them, from every angle. I loaded each of them and examined the razor with all of them. Visually, I could not tell one bit of difference from one guard to the next.
Good questions. Glad you have not followed the thread closely. You will have a nice unbiased opinion We leave a blade in because loading blades into an injector without one can be problematic. That is pretty much it. When loading the blade go nice and slow on this one. As it is basically a bata razor, there are a few things that will need sorting out. Mainly adding more spring tension. As for the combs. If you were to measure the overall length. You will find that starting with the MILD and moving forward. Each comb gets .1mm shorter. Making the blade exposure increase by aprox .1mm. Not much difference by eye, but makes a difference in the shave. Hope you enjoy your time with it. PS. make sure when you load the blade do not run the blade across the stops. It will wreck your shave. Tom
Thanks Tom. When I loaded my blade, the far side did pop out over the stop, and I had to push the blade back into the razor. I also haven't seen it explained in the initial posts, but the NOTSO guard? Does that mean NotSo Mild and NotSo Wild, therefore in-between (medium)?
And whatever you do, KJ, DO NOT shave one of your tarantulas. It will only upset him! (and no, that's not a euphemism.)
Ok, so my shave this morning went as follows. Chick blade (1) M&F Chief brush Williams Mug Soap Bootlegger's Perfecto AS Mild guard So, I put the spring against my face as suggested. Then lowered it until the blade contacted my face. I was a bit surprised that the spring was no longer on my face by that point. As high as it sticks up, I half expected it to be some sort of guard as well. The razor felt fairly aggressive, but quite efficient. I didn't get any weepers, but I felt like I could have. Not sure if I'll be needing a thing more aggressive than this. In fact, I could use something a little more mild. The shape of the razor does not suit my grip preference. I choke up on my razors. Every razor I own and use gets gripped near the head. This is where I want to grip it. But the width at that point makes it hard to grasp, and the slope of the razor and smooth finish makes your fingers slide down. Maybe if it has grooves or ridges on the side that would help, but the width would still be awkward. This is the only place along the whole handle where a grip seemed to work. So that os taking some adjustment. The closeness of the shave was great. Easy two pass plus touch up BBS, just like my Personna, however not as comfortable. Halfway through the day I was still feeling some slight skin burning from it being aggressive. I should have followed this shave with a balm. I'll play with the angle tomorrow and see if I can soften up the shave a bit. Here are a couple fun pics:
Great review and thoughts KJ. Noting that this is a newly designed razor, YMMV becomes that much more a component....but just in regard to the angle, I thought I'd point users to a great depiction of how one shaver compared the shaving angle on standard injectors and the Bunny. Again, a big YMMV caveat. btw - nice shaving partners you have there!
I just recently notice that all spider legs are attached to the head instead of the body. These pictures just confirmed it again.
Ah, thanks. My angle might be too big. Especially gripping the razor at the bottom, it's hard for me to control that. But this handle from that thread looks like it would solve that problem, and allow me to grip the razor where i want to.
Well, todays shave went a little better in the comfort area. I increased the angle away from my skin, so that the spring actually was on my face. I had to put a little more pressure on the razor to get the blade on my skin, but it was much more comfortable, and no aggressive harshness. Perfectly smooth shave. However, I hated every minute of it. This razor is not comfortable for me to use at all. It was awkward to hold on to and maneuver, and my wrist was a it sore by the end. I learned early on that I get better control of the razor by choking up on it and holding it near the head. For me, the whole "let the weight of the razor do all the work" is a bunch of hooey. I agree, it's good sound advice to give to a newbie, so they can learn the difference between DE and carts. But I like to hold the razor near the head, and adjust the pressure myself. This razor does give me some of the best shaves, but that doesn't matter to me if it's not comfortable to use. This handle design is a deal breaker for me. But I'll continue to experiment.
Took the Bunny to Kansas City this weekend. Here's a few shots... The KC skyline: Liberty Memorial, WW1 museum: Union Station: Took a tour of the Roasterie:
Took it to the DaVinci exhibit. Here's me inside a replica of DaVinci's tank. Yeah, I realize you can't see any of it, lol. The bunny giving DaVinci a shave.... ....and Mona Lisa.
