Have shaved my head for more years than I can (or care to) remember. In my experience sun burn is a much bigger threat than shaving related injuries. Occassionally I'll pick up a small nick here or there, of course they tend to bleed like a slaughtered hog but styptic pencils are cheap. My weapon of choice (for face and dome) for years was a Mach 3 but with the advent of the wet shaving revolution, I abandoned the Mach 3 all together and opted for traditional safety razors for both purposes. Again, in my experience SE razors seemed a bit too aggressive for cranial use. Double edge razors just seemed more suited to the job. My dome razor of choice for a very long time was a 1966 Slim Adjustable. More recently I've started using a Tech and have even taken an open comb Gillette Single Ring to my spud on a couple of occassions. My recommendations for new comers: 1. When in doubt run the clippers first. 2. Take your time and realize that not only does your dome have a very different topography but you're doing most of the shaving behind your back and don't have the eyeballs on luxury of face shaving. 3. Rinse the razor frequently 4. WH or moisturizing lotion to personal taste. 5. Generally what works well on your face will work well on your head (although I would not recommend uber aggressive SE razors or straights for dome use, but hey if you feel froggy.) 6. Sun burn on your gulliver is a decided unpleasant (not to mention unsightly event) When outside, wear a hat. 7. Concerns of a shaved head being cold are, in my experience greatly overblown. I lived in interior Alaska for six years and sported a smooth dome the entire time, year round. 8. Although I've never had much of a problem with razor burn or ingrown hairs on my head, I don't know that I'd recommend daily shaving of the head. In fact, these days I find once or twice a week to be more than adequate. PS: Surely you jest about the rug! Far too much time effort and money is wasted on hair loss denial. Being bald isn't a bad thing, in fact its pretty cool most of the time and if you're like me, nature kind of took your say in the matter away. I just don't see much point in dwelling on things I can't change. I've never seen anyone wear a toupee that didn't look ridiculous or at least laughably fake. (Howard Cosell comes to mind). Dead animal decoration on the head...uh...none for me thanks
I upgraded my weapon of choice from Weishi to Gillette Tech to Gillette New to my new iKon DE loaded with a Dorco. Takes me less than 2 minutes to shave my dome, 1 pass ATG, finished. I believe the lather is much more important than the actual tool. Ueberlather Plus all the way! Besides, I like my BBS dome. Gives me a good excuse to wear hats. I love hats, always did, even when I still had some hair up there.
I use a Gem 1912 with a Ted Pella blade and Tabac soap in the white jar with excellent results....smoooth.Finish it off with some Aqua Velva.
I love when old threads of mine come up months later. I'm loving the hats, since I still feel greasy with any sunscreen. I've found the Weishi is just good as the Fatboy. I just don't have the time and $'s for a straight right now.
No need for the money and skill for a straight. The Gem is like a straight razor on a stick...The thick blade is a big plus with head shaving. You can find a Gem 1912 for a very reasonable price
Based on what I've experience using the MicroMatic on my face I'm not real eager to go that route. I can't go ATG with the MicroMatic without irritation and so the overall shave isn't as close. That said, it give as good a shave as anything else if I don't count an ATG pass.
You guys mean to say you don't use a flaming taper to get your ear and nose hair?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSmRjlY8rdA (@ 3:40 - ish) James.
haha well it will provide a closer and faster hair cut... but I don't think the smell will be pleasant. I still remember when I burnt a couple of my hairs with a candle by accident:sick007 :happy102
The 1912 is nonthing like the Micromatic, thank god! I never shave against the grain, head or face. Some times I even lather up with a Wee Scot and still get excellcent results
