If you look towards a kamisori style, do look at CJB. If you want to go folding, I recommend a Kia Captain, (same basic head shape as Feather DX, CJB) or an Irving Barber Co. Both the Kia and the IBC are in the same price range as a Feather SS.

I am both a straight and shavette shaver, and I found the IBC to be the easiest to use when I was learning. When I switched to mostly straights, the IBC was one of a few shavettes that made the cut, and still sees regular use. Not necessarily trying to pimp it that hard over the others, but it is a great shaving tool that is relatively unknown compared to its Japanese competition. It was designed and made by barbers, for barbers, and has a pretty cool (IMO) look to it.

 

I have an SS Kamisori style and am able to get wonderful shaves with it. It took some practice to get it figured out, but is actually easy to use. And yes, it is not forgiving when I don't pay attention. Have fun!

 

The blades cost more than DE; roughly how many shaves can you get out of each blade?

 

The IBC does have a nice look to it. It's one that I eventually want to pick up.

Just looked at the IBC and is definitely in the lead due to ability to use a variety of blade styles, magnetic blade retainer (to hold in place while tightening), availability of parts exchange, price is close to the Feather SS, comes in a variety of colors, and I think it's made in USA (bonus if it is).

 

I don't know that I put a lot of stock in the multi blade use thing. If you use an injector blade, it doesn't make it more nimble or shorter, it just puts less blade in the blade holder. Same thing with the 1/2 DE. It also doesn't seem to always clamp down tightly on the DE halves. I have never cut myself with it, but you can move them around.

I recommend it as an excellent AC style razor, that does a marginal to acceptable job with the others. If someone asked me based off a desire to use other than AC blades, I would not recommend it.

 

With all this discussion about shavettes it got me thinking...I haven't used my Parker SRB.
I loaded an equinox blade in and went to town. It seemed way easier than I remember and provided a fantastic 3-pass finish.

Not it was a main selling point, but blade options are interesting. My real curiosity was blade life of AC blades that @SharptoothC answered.

 

OK, good. As the one who brought it into the mix, I just wanted to make clear that I don't think too much of it as a multi-blade platform.

As far as longevity of AC blades, I have a pretty (really) coarse beard, and don't use them for more than four or five shaves. I can get a couple more from a Mongoose or General, but in the shavettes, no.
