A great B-day gift, congrats!! I personally find the Aeropress to make a much better cuppa joe than any French Press I have tried.....Enjoy! :happy096

So I was trying to clear my mind cause I've been doing work all day and I've been looking around at coffee stuff. I wound up at the other (ICK!) forum and was looking at some of the other stuff. I feel really bad for people who have never owned espresso equipment before and are looking to get into it. I dont post over here so I figure I'll talk here. The baratza machines (besides the new $400+) model generally arent good for espresso. Their burrs are mounted on cheap plastic holders and they flex to much for a consistant espresso grind. Good for french press, bad for espresso. If you've never ever made espresso before, start with a machine that has a pressurized portafilter to decide if you even want to do it. Its a tiny bit of a PITA to be honest. You've really got to love it and want to do it. And thats with a pressurized portafilter. If your going the non pressurized route, you need to learn to tamp, you need a GREAT grinder, than you need to read a lot for tips on your machine and learn to dial it all in. It will take a while to learn. Dont go throwing $1k in the air (it'll cost about that for the silva and a rocky) if you dont know if its something you want to spend the next 20 years doing (both machines WILL last that long).
Starbucks does carry a 100% stainless steel carafe french press, I was given it for Christmas after I broke my glass carafe that exact way. The stainless carafe is doublewalled, and holds the heat quite nicely. I love coffee so much that my kids bought me a 40 cup perc for my holiday events this year. I got it in late Oct, and have put 15lbs through it already. My wife and I go through way too much coffee. BTW I luvs me some Earl Grey, English or Irish Breakfast etc.
I wouldn't suggest buying one from starbucks, as they are over priced. Also, no point in getting a SS one and not glass because once you have your 1.5-4 minute brew time thats it. You dont store the coffee and come back for a second cup as it just keeps brewing. Check the internet, marshals and those discount stores. They're all over. The finer the grind, the shorter the brew time. SM sells nylon screens to help keep the dust out.
I can't even drink coffee out of a metal cup, I swear I can taste the metal. I think if I got a press it would have to be glass.
I posted that before I saw you lived internationally. Its not a bad deal in the US as you can get one for under $20 and shippings $9 up to 20lbs. So it isnt expensive to add into a green bean order.
Oh, by the way: Did I mention that I love my naked portafilter? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO8aVKCHA5Y (Okay, the shot was a tad underextracted but it still tasted mighty fine )
Thanks Klaus!!! Witch one did you get and is it good quality? Have you seen his youtube video??? One handed brewing :happy097
@Gisle: I bought mine over a year ago and he doesn't seem to have that exact model in stock anymore. But it was a brass one, ant it is of good quality, no complaints here http://www.freshcoffeeshop.com/en/ibriks-turkish-coffee-pots-8/brass-ibriks-coffee-pots-10/ @JayKay: Well, yes, I ground the beans a bit too coarse so there was a bit of blonding. But the particular coffee (a lightly roasted Monsooned Malabar) also has a lighter crema than other beans.
Since the last time I posted in the thread I picked up a french press, couldn't pass it up at $10 at TJ Maxx, even with an Aeropress on the way. Decent coffee. Yesterday my Aeropress arrived, so I made a cup over lunch, highly impressed. I made another this morning. It is just so smooth. I made it really dark this morning, used as much coffee as they said to use for 20 oz, but made a 15 oz cup, and it is still super smooth and delicious. Goes through a lot of beans, but for a cup of coffee like that, very worth it.
Glad your'e enjoying it Rodd. Thats one thing I've also noticed. You go through a lot more beans making good coffee than bad drip coffee.
