Two completely different GEM Micromatic Open Comb base plate model

G'day Den,

I've noticed something very strange about the GEM Micromatic Open Comb if you can see two round bumps on each end of the base plate, I've also notices on the Bullet Tip as well and they've got two round bumps on each end shown. My question is why the gold GEM Micromatic Open Comb doesn't have to two bumps shown on each end, because I began to understand the GEM blade will be completely flat on the base plate. Has anybody can tell the differences between shaving performance on each GEM razor, or do they both shave exactly the same regardless of the two bumps as shown below.

 

Yes they shave the same. The bumps were for the double edge micromatic blades if I have it right. With out a spine the bumps hold the blade at the right angle. Once the modern blades came into play the razor did not need the bumps for that. That is my understanding.

 

I love questions and answers like this! I find this stuff fascinating. Guess I'm quit the info nerd that way.

I don’t know if it’s the way the picture was taken or just me, but the gold one looks like a short comb .. the teeth look smaller

 

I see the same thing. However, that may be an optical delusion.

The whole head looks smaller to me.
Edit: The one on the left looks like the teeth on the left are longer than the teeth on the right. Same razor.

 

I've heard they do feel a little different, but can't confirm as I don't have both. Come back and let us know if they feel any different to you.

 

I am pretty sure they are the same length.

 

Ok, maybe I'm part of the "delusional" camp, but looking closely where the letters are stamped, especially "Trade Mark". It also seems that the area above the teeth is also a bit narrower. The "Trade Mark" stamping is closer to the bottom part above the teeth, almost flush. And to me, the teeth do seem a bit shorter.

 

Well in my mind there are two versions now. A long comb and short comb... let the hunting begin

S#@T!! I didn't see that more closely and yes the teeth are in different length, where silver OC is slightly longer then the gold OC.

 

Awesome find. Now I gotta dig through my stuff and see if I have both!
