I actually was reading on another forum where people said to squeeze and shake all the water out of the brush before loading. Well I did this morning and although it still wasn't as good as I would have liked it was way better and actually stayed on my face and head through the entire shave.
I would like to try van der hagen but i am sad to see it contains sodium laureth sulfate. This chemical element makes easy to lather but not good for skin health.
Dude you like in Canada.. Why not ask someone if they could get one while grocery shopping and send it out to you =P
Excellent, thorough review. As a newbie, I tend to shy away from things that are widely available. I know it's counterintuitive, but it's a tendency I've picked up in the course of venturing into new hobbies in the past, and with good reason. I'm glad to see that this reluctance in this case is unfounded. After all, ready availability and reasonable cost are two huge bonuses as long as the product itself is of good quality. Thank you for the review- I will definitely keep this on my radar.
Yeah its honestly easier with less water at the beginning. Honestly every soap can be a little different, and there are loads of videos. This one is a good video with the luxury version of this soap, I would try practice lathers(like 2-3 per day) if you are using the VDH brush that came with the deluxe kit it'll help break your brush in and help with your technique. I would certainly try to load the brush with enough soap(basically you may end up with too much later at the end but who cares), then add water slowly. The VDH soap really does later nicely, assuming your water isn't really hard it should be possible to produce lots of good lather every time with it. I
My opinion, best bang for the buck. They still carry it at the BX/PX for $ 1.50. Always pick up two whenever I get out to McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst.
I think jayaruh has a guide for that. He has done it with colonel conk soaps. Check the tutorial thread, you if I recall he has a step by step with labeling =) Check his SOTD for pictures of the deo stick with colonel conk logo:
I am not doing anything special to get the lather. Quite the contrary, I am putting very little effort into it. Try using less water in the brush. If you need to add more water later on, you can. I am lathering the soap in a shaving mug rather than a shaving bowl. I am not sure if that would make any difference, though. Here are a list of online stores that carry the soap: http://vdhent.com/purchase.html. Even if they are in the US, they should be able to ship to Canada. It might be a good idea to ask one of your local pharmacies if they will be stocking this popular soap. If they figure they can make money selling the soap, they might consider carrying it.
Texas Eskimo...you got it right lol Thanks for the video! I did realize I had way to much water in my brush when loading and dumb me just kept adding water...not sure my logic behind that at all. My lather earlier was better and I'm about to shave again so here's to more practice
