I returned to shaving with a DE razor about 5 years back but only became interested in vintage Gillettes a year or so ago.

At first I was leery of the hype - not to mention relative prices - of good condition Fat Boys and was quite happy with the Slims and Super Speeds I had acquired.

Then I saw a complete '58 first model Fat Boy set in excellent condition on eBay for a decent price and bought it, as much to complete the collection of Gillettes I have as anything else. Pretty soon after I cleaned it and used it it overtook everything else as my favourite razor. And being the cantankerous, sarcastic, aporetic and skeptical bugger that I am, the Fat Boy really surprised me and now I rarely use anything else.

As far as that gold plated Super109 it shaves the same as the non gold plated 76 Super 109 I had on a 9 setting. Better overall shave than the Fat Boy at 9 but a lot more aggressive than a Fat Boy on 9. For anyone looking to buy a Black Beauty the 109s all shave the same gold plated or not, regardless of year or base plate style. The one that does shave different on a 9 setting is the Super 84. That one is more akin to a Slim on 9. A little more aggressive than the Slim but just as smooth of a shaver as the Slim set on 9. Both are less aggressive on a 9 setting than the Super 109s. Right now I prefer the Super 84 over any of the Super 109s.

Tomorrows shave will be on 7 with the gold plated Super 109.

Gillette Fatboy / Polsilver super iridium

Three days growth and the end to a busy week couldn’t come any sooner. Decided to crack the case on the 53 Super Speed and give it a go and quite glad I did. Loaded up with a Personna Platinum and a perfect match. I can’t say enough about Fine Fresh Vetiver as a soap and AS. I also have Italian Citrus and both are fantastic. Face lather with the Chubby 1 and more than enough for 3 passes. BBS and a perfect shave. The 40’s style Super Speeds are pretty awesome and this one is up there with my Aristocrat Jr. (49-52 - England) for efficiency and smoothness. Happy shaves!

very cool ,i am a big fan of fine soaps/ aftershaves and the early superspeed..simple and effective..

 

Original. Handle is cracked, but inserted with a rod and marine epoxy. Also have the blade bank and case...both in excellent condition.

very nice old type..

 

I have a mint cased 59 Fatboy and a 60 that is in rotation that a buddy down Texas way got for me. I enjoy the Fatboy shaves very much and though I have several Slims/Aristocrats and Super Adjustables I travel with the 60 regularly.

 

Very nice I have two Old Types a 102 and 102A both are wonderful shavers. Looks pretty nice in original condition.

 

It really was a great shave...

 

Up for tomorrow the millennial special, a 1981 Black Beauty. With this I will have shaved through all the Gillette adjustables I own on the 9 setting.
