Working my way through newly acquired razors: finally, the Tuckaway!

The baseplate was a real mess. It is not perfect now, but shaves fine. Removing all the corrosion required a propane torch, as well as a lot of time and red polishing compound. Some silver is gone for good, some tarnish is so stubborn that it has been re-classified as patina and character.

Handle = nice. Cap = not bad. Baseplate = barely acceptable aesthetics, but much smoother than it looks. The case has a lot of stubborn 'character' but I'm happy with it. Inside it is pretty nice.

Pre-shave wash: Col Conk Lime mentholated
Razor: silver Tuckaway, love the 65mm / 2-9/16" shorty handle!
    Blade: Rapira Platinum Lux (5)
Lather: RazoRock Black Label stick, custom black badger stubby, Capt Choice copper
After: alum, hops infused witch hazel, Old Spice Classic AS (first use)

Oh yeah! When I thought it would NOT clean up, I was considering getting @PLANofMAN to slantify it. I wanted to anneal an Old Type for slantification, but decided to torch the hideous Tuckaway plate first.

When I torched the plate to a low glow, I noticed that the corrosion (or whatever, it was nasty looking stuff) seemed to be disappearing. I was outside after dark to avoid fumes and see the glow. I quenched and inspected it. Promising result! So I heated and quenched again. Red polishing compound and elbow grease made things even more promising. I could even read the serial number.

The next night I torch/quench cycled twice again. Then another red polish session. That is where I left it. The crud has 'burned off'. You could see the cruudy sections reacting differently to the flame than the cleaner areas of the plate. What was that crud? It didn't look like tarnish or verdigris. The torch flame did not go green to signify copper. So whatever substance oxidized or sublimated did not give me much of a clue. The formerly cruddy spots definitely are devoid of silver plate, but the rest of the plating seems to have survived the torching.

That's definitely above and beyond. I've never gone beyond OxiClean, and that scared me.
