Hi all, this mornings vintage Gillette SOTD was made with my early 1900’s Gillette Canada ABC Pocket Edition Smooth Round Ball Old Type Razor, and a 1956 Gillette Blue Blade.

Very Nice! Can you tell me what the serial no. is for the razor? Dating the Canadian sets has been quite the challenge, however, your base-plate is consistent with those made prior to 1911.

Hi, the serial number is PC 10319. . You are correct in that the Canadian Gillette’s are undateable in exactitude, but this set has several identifiable features that can help me make a very close guestimation of when it was made. It has the clasp type latch of the earliest cases, also this case is of the shorter more squat Basketweave pattern, also it has the Smoothe Round Ball handle, and all those plus another identifier or two, indicate this set is one of the earliest Canadian ABC Pocket Edition. The comb guard plate is not the stamped variety of the early ABC sets, it doesn’t look milled to me either. I would almost venture a guess it was formed in a mold. But it is only a hunch. But as it stands all indicators point to 1907 or 1908. I believe this set is one of the earliest around. Thanks for your interest.

Those New Deluxe style heads are fantastic shavers. If I recall, the razor you have there is a New Belmont. There is a chromium version called a New Criterion as well. Both have the same handle of a New Standard, and the head of a New Deluxe. Both are a great shave. Enjoy.

 

my 1930 new deluxe criterion is gold , was a silver /nickel version available as well? cheers
