Thank you .. Im thinking about doing it. I think my weber will be better than its right now, I realized the gap is much bigger than I thought. It doesn't look good
If you do it, and I suggest you do (to get it perfect), go slowly and use a fine grit paper as mentioned in the link. Better more fine than mentioned than coarser. Better go so slow that you have to do 5 passes and re-check often than do 2 and realize it was too much already.
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that has a Weber PH with no wave. As far as aggressiveness I only compared it with my Gillette Slim. My EJ89 I have to rate a 4 on a Slim and my Weber PH at 6, using a new Astra blade at each shave. Also take into consideration that the Weber has more blade exposure than the Slim.
If you do happen to have one, be happy about it! I thought mine was straight as well, alas, it was not. Just not really visible to the naked eye :-( Some are worse than others. With the way they make (made) the heads, I can suspect every one is more or less even. The way they produced them was not the best method. It was bound to be a problem. I cannot describe the method (English is not my native tongue) but try and Google it. I saw a description somewhere, but I cannot locate it at the moment.
I wouldnt know how to get it all symmetrisk and parallell. How do I Hold it so that the "bump" gets honed down and not the good sides?
I'm aborting mission, feels like I'm gonna ruin the razor. I'm honing down the corners it seems. I'm not sure that's what I'm supposed to do. You can see in the pictures how it looks. But the thing is, the rails are not even straight. They follow the "bent" top plate. So if I continue, I might ruin the way the blade sits in the razor. @tuxxdk is this how it's supposed to look?
That looks pretty bad, I'm afraid. I'm not sure how to guide you, as I would feel bad giving ill-advice. My own approach was to colour the rails with a filt-pen and then file slowly until the pen-marks was evenly touched. But if the corners are honed and you evenly press/hold the plate, then they must be the highest point?
Looked at my Weber PH under magnifying glass with blade in. Saw an ever so slight wave but far from the pictures above. No wonder he stopped making heads, the problem was inconstancy. I guess I can live with a bit of a wave. Or the next step is an ATT
As long as you're being careful to hold the baseplate flat and not rocking it as you go back and forth, I think you're doing ok @Omelmad . The corners are probably just the highest point on yours. If your top cap is uneven too that'll also need some work. Mine was the same way but I was able to even it out enough with a small ceramic hone. A triangle shaped one with about 1/8" sides fit in there well and removed just enough material.
Its very weird. But yes that must be tje reason. Im barely putting any pressure I wouldnt add pressure as I have no Idea which "side" is Making the weave. I dont want to ruin my razor. But I really Wanna fix that damn weave hahaha. It feels like its getting a little better
I was being VERY Careful, i Love this razor hahaha. Thats why I stopped, im a Afraid i Will ruin it, but i think the corners ARE the highest points. But I think I'm gonna leave it as is =P I can't afford another stainless steel razor. Plus I'm in a few years long no buy =P my girlfriend would kill me if I bought a razor right now
The far easiest way to tell if it's wavy is to take the baseplate upside down on a even (!) surface and feel if it's rocking. It can be really hard to tell from just looking. I actually don't know precise how many grits my wetstone is, only it's a good deal more than the 1500 recommended. I used it because it's the only one I have and I didn't want to order a coarser one. I just took a few extra turns instead. I understand you don't want to ruin it. I also don't want to be the one who ruins it for you, but it would make it easier to help to see it in person. Not that I recommend you send it.. haha. But you know what I mean.
From looking at mine, I have a theory on what happened with these heads. It looks like they polished them as the last step in manufacturing which is not the right way to do it. Even worse, it looks like they were pretty heavy handed with the buffer. The final step should be machining the critical dimensions on the rails to ensure they're flat and the correct height all the way across. The caps also sometimes seem a bit warped. This is also pretty normal if they're cast but they don't look like they're machined to the correct dimensions at the end. Anyway, at the price these sold for they were a good value. Some of them need a little work to make them great though.
I did that test thing. I think it got a little better actually haha. But I'm not sure. I'm just worried I will make it crooked. I might cry =P it's been my best razor so far!
I think my best alternative is to go back in time to my Gillette Adjustables or if I'm going to get a new razor, a Merkur Progress. Hmmm food for thought
If it shaves well, just shave with it. Mine did not shave very well with the wavy blade though. After fixing it up, it's great. One of my most efficient razors. I can easily get a one-pass DFS with it. Two passes and as close to BBS as I really ever get.
