Plus, and I know it has been stated many times beforehand here, you can think of the razors and blades as an investment. Micromatics, Old Fat Handled 3 pieces, and Superspeeds are rock solid; as I am sure of the Feather Stainless, Merkurs, and so on. I have an idea in the back of my head to purchase a couple of vintage razors and clean them up to put in a time capsule. Then in the distant future when everyone is shaving with lasers and sonic devices some excavator will unearth it, look at it, and scratch their head in wonderment. To quote the (Awesome) band Rush and their 2112 album, "What can this strange device be?" If you look at it this way, price becomes priceless.
last year i spent about 10$, thats one can of shaveing gel and a few 5 packs of DE blades although i did shave rarely maybe once a week
I've just started wet shaving and enjoy it much more than cartridges, but cartridges were nvere expensive. I could get a few month sout of ever cartridge, so a 5 pack for $20 would last me a year. I bought the can-o-goo on bilk when on sale so it cost me mabe another $20/year. I had the same Mach 3 handle for 14 years so no cost there. Wet shaving is still vary reasonable even with startup (especially for me as I got a Merkur razor and Badger brush as a gift), but its less about the cost and more about the better shave and increased enjoyment. Money is tight just now. Besides, I have found the one razor to rule them all (Weber) and my personal best blade (Personna Lab). That only leaves soaps, aftershaves and brushes... I want to try every soap I see, and I would like to experiment with more aftershaves, but am mostly satisfied in that area. I have like 12 brushes... I have 2-2 1/2 years of soap/cream on hand, and 4 years worth of blades... think my hobby has become more of a low-cost but very satisfying (would never trade it for anything else!) daily ritual for a while. Unless someone has a spare Darwin sitting around...
I amortize my infrastructure purchases over 20 years, so all razors, brushes and scuttles are amortized. To lower expenses even more I consider all purchases to try new blades, soaps and creams to be R&D and amortize them over fives years. Using these accounting treatments I am finally saving money.
I think I'll put a $900 dollar notation on my taxes this year for "research and development," because putting it down for "personal grooming supplies" would make me look like a self-absorbed ass. Which, now that I think about it, probably is closer to the truth than I'm really comfortable with... [shrugs, hits "Post Reply" anyway].
