After some contemplation on the Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams videos, I went back to the music that inspired some of his best skits... Esquivel Orquestas de Oro : Esquivel
I love Bossa Nova aswell....Jobim was a melody master... One of my favorite quotes concerning Getz came from Coltrane who said;" We would all sound like Stan Getz if we could..." Some of my favorite Getz...and an album thats like an encyclopedia of Be-Bop phraseology...
I really start to play Christmas Albums about 1 week before Christmas. Here is a fantastic jazz guitar album by the master Kenny Burrell. I have the LP version that I mastered to CD format. However, it is available on CD and download now. It is amazing how he dances through these old standards (a few of which were at the time rather new). 1960s classic recording! Some Chi-town (Cadet / Chess Records) Soulful Jazz Christmas music can melt away the holiday blues.
I have had that Kenny Burrell album for over 35 years. I don't think I've brought it out at Christmas for at least 20 years. That drought is coming to an end this Christmas. Thanks for reminding me about a great record.
This was always my favorite Christmas album...Don Patterson plays like Bird on this....I transcribed every note.... Holiday Soul with Don Patterson-Organ;Pat Martino-Guitar;Billy James-Drums....from 1964 on Prestige.... Years later when I saw Donnie live, of course I thought of this album, but many years after Don had left us....I was making a gig in Philly and the drummer didn't show and he sent Billy James as a sub...lol...I was in heaven... And of course I thought of growing up with this album...
Another favorite from Chi-town (Cadet / Chess Records). Again even though my copy has been transferred from the Vinyl, you can get this digitally now.
Here is another vinyl favorite from the past. The Star Carol - Tennessee Ernie Ford With his strong full baritone, Tennessee Ernie really brought a potent sound to Christmas as this album attests! Capitol was at this time using the most modern equipment and studios to produce a warm sound that still moves as much as this was made in 1958. I had forgotten about the simply beauty of the song, "Some Children See Him" which is both haunting and gentle. An absolute gem of a song. It is available for download. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000008FPK/?tag=thshde-20 Here are some reviews from listeners. http://www.amazon.com/Star-Carol-Te...iewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending
Continuing with the Capitol theme. Nat King Cole - Cole, Christmas, and Kids Here is a sample: All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth ... this one is a true tear jerker. The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot .
Now who wants a little Christmas Cookin'? Jimmy Smith - Christmas Cookin'! JS and his smokin' hot B3! Christmas is on afterburner when Smith is your pilot!
This isn't Christmas music but it's certainly a gift...check it out...Dizzy Live...A short 25 min. documentary....1965 This is around the time when I first started hangin' with Diz when I was in High-School. And the same things he's talking about here were the same kind-a-things he was laying on me....He was a blessing that sure changed my life, and the whole scene for that matter... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=m5DrW3xegvI
I have currently started listening to more jazz music... I seem to be enrole in a History of Jazz course next semester online. I hope that it is interesting.
