I ordered an Above The Tie razor with two baseplates. The only Canadian website I could find that stocks ATT has been sold out for quite some time, so I ordered directly from the company. I ordered the Atlas with the R1 baseplate plus an additional H1 baseplate.
I've spent far too much money on shaving gear in the last three months, and the US to Canadian exchange rate is killing me but I've wanted one for so long and I'll be getting a modest income tax return so I rationalized it! I hear the quality is top notch.
A "Vintage rare collectable Gillette Safety Razor Made in England in 1950's," according to the eBay listing title. We are perhaps more familiar with it as the British N° 58 Aristocrat, sometimes called the N° 58 Coronation Set if it's the varient with the crown on the case. There are two types of this razor. An aluminum varient, and a brass varient, which weighs in at approximately 71 grams, putting it firmly in the Rocket HD family of razors. This is the brass heavy varient. This will be my first Rocket, Aristocrat, and British DE razor, all in one nice tidy bundle. Ain't she pretty?
I wasn't even looking for one of those. I was just looking for a Rocket in decent condition. Did a search for "Brit. Pat. Razor," saw that one and said "Holy @#$% that's gorgeous!" It pretty much flew under the radar because of the listing title. The search turned it up because of the description: "Vintage rare collectable Gillette Safety Razor Made in England in 1950's Brit. Pat. 694093 weight 71.70 grams Twist to open design Nickel-plated Case is in good condition, however there are signs of wear throughout the case: ink stains etc." Sometimes it pays off to use obscure searches on eBay. Misspelled words, etc.
Found it, did you? I wonder how it ended up in Sofia, Bulgaria? Oddly enough, many of my vaping devices come from GP, which is also located in Sofia.
You're so right Ryan! I've even typed in phrases in reverse order and had better results sometimes. Funny thing is, now if someone actually searching for one stumble's onto the sold listing, they'll be like: "Gotta hand it to that guy...he just wanted it more"!
Nice, I think I saw that one come up or similar from either Greece or Bulgaria. I was under the impression you were "thinning out" wedding costs and all.
I'm on the lookout for a Sheraton. Bought one of these too. A "Vintage style blade bank." The seller has a variety of them listed. Didn't come with the Fatboy or blades though.
That's a gorgeous razor. I tried snagging one for myself several months back, but was outbid at the last minute every time. Congratulations!
Use Gixen. It has saved me money and won me auctions on countless occasions. You put in the max you are willing to bid, and Gixen will submit it for you in the last few seconds. If someone has a higher bid than that, you will still lose, but people won't have time to outbid you at the last second. It still follows standard eBay rules, so the actual bid will be incremental, just like bidding through eBay itself. @Darkbulb has been known to use it on occasion, so I'm not the only one.
