I too am waiting on the lot of 200 Russian bladed. I picked this Gillette razor at an antique store today. Can anyone shed some light on my 17 dollar investment and the best way to prep it for use?
Looks like a Gillette Old Style. Under the top plate should be a serial number that can be used to tell when it was made. Same kind I started the 30 day with. Nice find. I paid a bit more for mine but it was in the khaki kit for ww1. Soak it in dish soap and take a soft brush to it. Use some Bsrbicide or something similar to sterilize it. Should be good to go.
No prob. I'll check my info on dating again. Some didn't have serial numbers which helps date them too. Gillette was a bit inconsistent on that at times but it works.
Two Plission (Joris) razors, both are open comb and plated in Palladium. One is a lacquered Black with thin White Lined Palladium the other is Thujawood and Palladium. Another Joris Black & White lined Palladium OC, and two Merkurs; 34C and Merkur 39C Slant.
Thanks. I bought the black/white Joris and the Merkurs first as I have always wanted to try a Joris and a friend of mine has been looking for a slant so I bought the package, then right after the two other Joris (Plissions) came available and I have always wanted the black with thin white lines so bought the pair. Will probably just keep two of the Joris razors though.
Sigh....11 days later and still waiting for my Swedish (A)Eterna razor that's being shipped from Finland. The razor: ...and how I am picturing it making its way across the pond....
"Back in the days" it took anything from 40 to 100 days to cross the Atlantic depending on weather conditions. I just hope my razor is securely tied down in the cargo hold and that there are no plundering pirates around looking for shiny loot. Here's how I envision the boarding of razor-seeking pirates would look like...
I don't think pirates were interested in shaving but I can see them selling that loot. Hopefully the royal navy is escorting your cargo.
100 mixed Russian blades, 2 Omega brushes, a Vintage mug and 64 Gillette slim Adjustable and whatever I may grab tonight...
Here's a picture of the baseplate and top piece of my 1918 showing the serial number. Nothing like that on yours? Not doubting you just checking because if not then you have a VERY early one, as in ca. 1903
Seeing the beard on that guy, I can see why they would be desperate for a razor. I have also finally ordered a WD silvertip brush. I have been eying them for some time now. In case you were wondering, I won my fantasy football super bowl, which came with a bit of financial freedom and explains all of my recent extravagance.
Here's the before and after. Not bad for $17.50 and a little bit of elbow grease! Two hits of scrubbing bubbles, brasso, 5 minute boil, and final hit of scrubbing bubbles. Thoughts on prep?
