oh ok get it now.the brit sets,probably others of that era had a card/liner that sat in the inner lid.probably for display purposes.had the price etc on it.

I've been wanting a Stahly Live Blade razor to use the unique head pieces - roller bar guard - on my own handle. Now I'm not sure if I'm still looking for one as this one I won last night is NOS and more worthy of the display case collection, and for $44.89, less than what used ones seem to be going for.

 

I love my Stahlys....it's not a roller guard though, just looks like one. That and the leaf spring suspension do make it a pretty unique head.

I've seen one where the guards did roll. Very recently at a local mega flea market. You may recall my post about the "tons 'o razors" I found there? Were there different variants made where the guards are fixed and some are actual rollers?

 

Hmm..I have 5 examples of various vintage and none roll.

I like ATT handles.

I'll review the patents and see if there is any indication of rolling.

The 1943 patent indicates the "guard may be fixed or rotatable". So apparently five Stahlys may not be enough. Damn.

I won't make a special trip just for that, but next time I find myself there, I will look and see if the seller still has it. The way he was on his prices, I doubt he will ever sell it.

 

I always kept an eye out for one at a decent price, didn't happen. But I got lucky when @Jrdelgado sent me a couple for some work I did for him. The one on the Tech handle was kind of broken, won't wind and broken head. So I used J-B Weld to fix it and it came in a similar wood case that @jmudrick has.

 

Overlooked a sixth Stahly...on one of my Series B heads I got the guard to spin just a quarter turn on one side with some mineral oil, so there are some that were rollers indeed. WD40 soak next I guess.

I hve owned the Roller Guard which was NOT a Stahly and now have the Roller Guard Razor. Give me a second to dig it up and get a picture.

 

To be honest, I thought they all rolled, hence the pins in the ends holding them in place. The patent info you posted is very good information, stating some rolled and some were fixed. The ones that are supposed to roll but do not seem to, could be just gummed up with old soap residue and/or weren't used enough, broken in, to loosen up? Could have been made with some kind of oil or grease inside the roller guard that may have dried out? I guess anything is possible.

 

I believe the first one you are referring to is the King Oscillator Razor with the two rollers on the top of the cap?

Edit: Nevermind. I forgot there was a three-piece Roller Guard roller guard razor that resembles a Gillette old type ball end:

 

I had a new old stock Roller Guard that came in a green box like pictured below and sold it some time ago and then acquired an actual Roller Guard Razor Complete as pictured now. They sold the Roller Guard alone to be used with the Gillette Old Type razors to make them more mild and it does work.
