Mine has the posts under the cap, so 164 it is. Another interesting note is the patent info on the handle is up top opposed to the bottom where it usually is?... or did they just not pay attention to its positioning when assembling and its 50/50 as too being on the top or bottom? As noted in the info, #164 was only produced in 1931 but not everything by Phil was accurate so dont take that as the gospel. Also as noted in the info, the Goodwills were made up from parts from Old Type razors and parts from NEW GILLETTEs - which could explain the patent info being on top of the handle instead of on the bottom. This means it could be a handle that was already made, or one they made down the line that way on purpose or on mistake. The guy that worked that production line that day could have had a really bad hangover or still have been drunk. You just never really know with Gillette. lol
Like Dave mentioned, usually when the patent date is at the top it means the handle was taken apart and reinstalled upside down. It could be through 90 years of existence at some point the ends came off and someone inserted them wrong, I certainly have done it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Rotbart Mond-Extra vest pocket razor is headed my way. I'm pretty sure it should clean up nicely. The case looks a bit rough & likely needs relined though.
Congrats Mike, I was watching that one but got busy. Wish they had a pic of the top cap.....NICE score !
Thanks Dave. I've gotta admit not seeing the top cap was a bit of a gamble I hope pays off. Fingers crossed...
I would have gambled if I wasn't tied up. I call it a GREAT score and bet the cap surprises you on being great condition
many of those cases had a purplish-blue lining. if needed I can send you enough to re-line it, or I can do it.
Thanks Jim. Much appreciated! You must have been reading my mind as you were going to be my go-to expert on this one. Hopefully it should arrive next week and I'll have a chance to see if it's something I can do or if I need to need your expertise.
I needed A proper pair of barber shears for my hair cutting kit; the cheap pair just weren't doing an adequate job. I looked in to a vintage pair of Boker and a pair of Carl Monkhouse (made in Ellicotville NY), but decided on a nice pair of Wiss "One Thousand". Sorry for the seller's poor pic. I'll probably blue the handles after cleaning them up.
