You have to be able to protect the bat just like a gun.

All real fights end on the ground. The trick is stopping the fight before someone can take you to the ground...

I'm a fan of The Walking Dead series. Read the graphic novel up to around issue 100, been watching the show from S01E01 since it aired. Got a chance to visit the Georgia town where Woodbury was filmed.

When the red handled machete was identified as available at Harbor Freight I added one to my collection of sharp things.

All that stuff is well and good, until you go up against an intruder with a weapon, any weapon. I've seen many 80+ men an women win a fight with an intruder, when all the older person had was a small pistol. Don't kid yourself, don't bring a fist to a gunfight.

Day One in Cop School: never lose your weapon?

What I am referencing is that it maintaining possession of a pistol in a close quarter fight could be hard if one doesn't know how to fight. If one can't fight, one's own gun can become a huge liability.

And there are those of us who will seek to put an opponent on the ground. Strikes are used to create distance or separation. Chokes, arm bars, and close knees and elbows end fights.

Yes, hand to hand combat is always great to learn, especially in close quarters, and in a fair fight.
To protect myself and my family, especially in my home, I will always use whatever weapon is at my disposal, legally. The good thing about Texas is, that just about everything is legal for home defense.

The threat is rapidly evaluated. Then a defense option in between BJJ and 5.56x45 is selected. And there are many options in between. Colorado is "castle doctrine" state, much like my birthplace of Texas.

I don't know what a BJJ is. but, I'm all for the good guys using everything legally at their disposal, to protect themselves, especially at home.
I would also love to see as many good guys learn hand to hand skills. It's all good, except being unprepared.

Everything in MN is legal too, unless you need to use it. Then you pretty much become the criminal.

We have no castle doctrine, and have an obligation to retreat (or some such verbiage), even in your own home.

I should mention that I also try to get to the firing range weekly. Like flying a plane, you need constant practice with firearms.
