To each den's motif I leave unto the individual. I too would just keep a small sharps container under counter. A small one would probably be large enough for like 5-8 years of blades. The big one is the 3017 size - I guess you just add a line in your will - "dispose of with owner"
I don't know about up there, but here, as a trash man, we're not allowed to pick up a sharps container. We would have to leave it. Just some information
Unless your local ordinances prohibit it. In California, they're increasingly becoming more stringent when it comes to 'hazardous disposable household material': hypodermic needles, razor blades, aerosol cans, chemicals, biohazards, bottles of unknown/unlabeled substances, plastic bottles containing used syringes, and other hazardous materials. Many areas won't pick them up unless they are in the proper containers so as not to wind up in landfill.
Are you talking about "bare" blades, or blade containers? Ne'er does a single blade go into the trash unless it is in some sort of container.
I just taped up and disposed of a Derby plastic blade package. Disposal means into my briefcase and then into school with me on Monday to go into our science department sharps jug. I think there were about 40 used blades in it. Next up, Wilkinson Sword package. It ought to take me up and perhaps through summer.
Steve, my understanding is right now a closed container may be passable, in some instances, but according to local waste agencies, medical sharps and razor blades are beginning to be classified as waste products with 'hazardous health potential'—and may be required to have identical methods of disposable. Anytime sharp objects and bodily fluids are involved in the mix, these regulation agencies jump into action.
Well I am new to wet shaving with a DE Razor and I noticed this thread and it got me to looking for something I could use. So I went to a local antique shop by my house and picked this up for 2.50 plus tax. I thought it was pretty cool.
I've got one of those old Faberge eggs too, but I use mine for sunflower seeds. For a blade bank I just keep an Altoids Minis tin in the bathroom. Not enough counter space to keep something cool or nice for a blade bank.
I use an empty Orville Redenbachers POP-CORN bottle, just drop the old razor blades in they fit good in the top of the bottle opening, then screw the red cap back on so if it falls no blades will fall out without unscrewing the red cap off first plus if you have curious kids or pet cats or dogs like mine that like the rattling sound of the blade in the bottle and try to get to it to knock it over to play it safe knowing the will not just fall out when shaken. Also you can see the blades inside the bottle so everyone know whats inside the bottle ...
I am using an empty Folger's instant coffee jar. It is the large size jar (holds over 100 cups of coffee!) so I figure that will last for several years.
