I hope I've helped you...I know shaving for some, myself included,is not an option, but rather a neccessity...I had to shave for work or get another job period no option..However that said I now know it doesn't need to be and in fact shouldn't be a painful miserable experience...What I've discovered at least for myself is while BBS maynot be possible, at least for me, with every shave...Pain and irritation free shaves are "completely" possible with virtually "EVERY" shave and are now for me at least the norm...:happy088:

The only difference between a cold water shave and a warm water shave is the temp of the water.

Oh, I thought things like how the grain softens, soap lathers, brush bristles behaves etc also may be effected by water temperature. I guess not :)

There are some 'arguments' for cold water shave here: http://www.artofmanliness.com/2010/03/24/cold-water-shaving/

    The two most notable, claimed benefits being;

    1) Cold water gives a better shave. The argument here is that a soft beard is hard to shave, while a stiff beard is easier to cut. Hot water makes your beard soft; cold water keeps the whiskers stiff. Thus, cold water renders a better shave.

    2) Cold water leaves the skin looking healthier. Hot water tends to dry out skin. If you want a nice looking mug, use cold water.

I guess they may be wrong then :)

Not necessarily. Some folks swear by cold water. I just can't do it - a very uncomfortable shave for me.

Next week's Theme Week is Penguin Club Week. Be sure to check it out.

I think I'm going to have to try it out myself. But....it may be more appealing to do in the summer time than right now...

    O
Oh, sure. Summer is the easy time ;) But you don't see folks taking the polar plunge in July, do you?

I would have to say my neck has been the biggest issue. My skin there is very sensitive, and does not take to well to shaving at all. The rest of my face is no problem to get close to BBS. But even being really careful I get some razor burn, and a few cuts in the tough areas of my neck. I like to shave at night before bed. It gives my skin the entire night to recoup. And my shave lasts throughout the next day.

Latest issue is along my jawline. I'm certain it has to do with razor angle as I go down, over and below the jawline.

FWIW - I shave my hubby so understand the neck issues, and perhaps can add a different perspective that may help:-
One I think helps is that I also work on my hubby with his head laid back so there is no muscular tension in his neck, allows me to move his head & tension the skin for better access, and sometimes asking him to help tension areas.
For him the areas of a 'shave map' are too big under there, the changes of growth direction are quite a bit more complex,
he also has completely opposite directional growth above & below his neck crease, so if I cross it going WTG i'm suddenly ATG on first pass which cause more irritation.
What I do as part of the third 'ATG pass' is to additionally use my free hand fingertips (wet & lathered) to check the actual ATG direction bit by bit (it can also help get a suitable skin tension or adjust hubby to help that) and shave against what I feel with an appropriate size stroke - seems to work quite well & has reduced irritation as not going over areas repeatedly.
    Hope that helps

I had a problem with bumps when I was in the Marines (because we had to shave so close). I learned early on that if you will rinse your razor in cool (luke-warm) water after every stroke, the bumps will usually go away. Also, rinsing your face in cool (luke-warm) water helps.

My biggest problem is right over my Adam's Apple. Those little hairs are tough, even for a straight razor. I spend at least half of every shave trying to prune those little rascals.

Thanks for the tips, but I do those things and still have the issue. For the Adam's Apple, I'm a convert to HolyRollah's "swallow and hold' method for going over the area without giving myself a tracheotomy.

It could be a medical issue. I knew some guys in the Navy that had special permission to grow beards because they had bump problems from medical conditions. Have you asked your doctor about it?

Biggest problem for now is staying away from sbad. If I will make it? Absolutely not. Next battle to loose will probably be staying away from ssad.
