What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

I used the 6/8 Geneva Pyramid 7 again.

 

Gold Dollar 1996, $8 off Amazon, and a bad example of one, the toe is considerably overground. But it shaved like a million bucks. Normally I’d toss one like this in the ‘later drawer’, but my fellow Gold Dollarer Slash McCoy and I got to talking over on B&B and I wanted to hone yesterday and this dog was on the bench.

Cream was the always splendid SMN and the lather in the Stirling bowl was exceptionally good - I’m liking this bowl! Brush was a Simpsons 57 and a little ABC almond balm finished up a BDBS shave.

 

Top notch shave today with the Filly. Nothing but face rubbing goodness.

Fired up the tea kettle and filled up the scuttle. Hot lather and a smiling blade was a nice way to start Wednesday. Ali's Blade

 

It's been a while, since I have had a proper shave. I had grown a thick and bushy beard, for the wife, daughter, and just to see if I could do it. I have now found I have a thick, coarse, and curly beard. 2 1/2 months later, it is time to remove. Well, all but a Goatee, the wife has been begging for, if the beard is removed. I don't get it, women seem to want me in a beard. Guess I have a face needing to be covered up. In all jest, in only one person said they didn't like it. Well, two including me. So, off it came. I chose an Old English razor I had restored, a long while ago, with very aged bone scales. Believe it or not, they use to be much darker. So, a 2 pass shave, that went very very smoothly. BBS results. Fine blade.

Pretty cool history and interconnections in that area of NY.

3rd day use of the 6/8 Geneva. Diamond 200k, linen, and horse hide prep last even produced a near shavette this AM.

 

Shave #64 with the Filly 14 Sub Cero, soap was 3P lathered with a Simpsons 59, and a I Coloniali Rhubarb ASB finished up.

 

Cattaraugus Cutlery
Staying in Little Valley, NY this evening, which is the county seat of Cattaraugus County.

Started by J.B.F. Champlin who looks to be the “father” of bringing razor making to Little Valley. Started a namesake cutlery company in 1865 that became Cattaraugus cutlery in late 1886. He married Theresa Case and hired his brothers-in-law as salesmen for Cattaraugus, later supporting them moving on to start the long lineage of Case Brothers cutleries. He passed in 1903 and his son Tint took over.

Very nice post Tom, if you have time, try to hit an antique shop or three and see if you can come up with a razor. Buying a Little Valley razor in Little Valley would be the ultimate trip memento.

E. A. Berg today, cream was Dior Eau Sauvage as was the AS and EdT. A Rooney 3/1 2-band clone by Lifetooshort1971 did the mixology in the Stirling bowl. 10/10 and BDBS. I touched up the Berg on a stone that I have that hard steel razors ‘like’, and it was a good match I think. The Berg has very hard steel and will take a fine edge.

 

Thanks Steve, but I was misleading in my statement. I’m not physically in NY... just keeping with the NY razor theme - my bad.

And beautiful Berg. Love those race car like lines.

 

I understand Tom, lots of fun to imagine ‘back in the day’. That Berg is finished like jewelry. It’s undoubtedly NOS and I imagine that few people have had the privilege of seeing one as E. A. Berg intended. I feel lucky indeed.

No, @GAW9576, they’re hard black rubber, the lighter base area is just kind of a fine diamond pattern to make contrast with the relief.

 

Started with a C-mon and ended with a Dovo...the C-mon had a slight pull, so no point torturing myself, gave it a run on a Shapton 12k then a thuri...job done.

 

Ed Brice is TGIF so time for some bling.

 

I didn’t like this Herder and the stainless steel blade when I first got it. But, in recent shaves I changed my mind and tonight it shaved like a champ.

Loved the shape and it had a real nice regrind during its life- the honing was easy.

The scales are not original and don’t quite cover the blade, so that caught me a little by surprise. I might know someone who will enjoy rescaling this blade .

I can’t say I have seen this stamp, any ideas? Maybe a deer???
