Please excuse the boring pics as I’m posting this without having considered capturing more appropriate pics for a post. Call it a New Guy misstep?

I get a bit of a chuckle every time I use this blade, at the so-called “butcher twine mod” I contrived last week. It’s cheap, feels fine, and it’s easy to replace but seems less than appropriate. What’s a better material? I like the look of rattan but would have to buy it just for this. I’m thinking there must be something better I can cross-utilize. Suggestions appreciated!

Takami Kamisori- wrought iron & Shirogami 1
    Hot water prep (post shower)
Bearded Mack “Roaring 20s” (test run as PSO)
    TOBS Sandalwood cream
    WCS Lantern brush
    Alum treatment
    Proraso “green” splash
BMack beard oil + butter (same flavor above for the whiskers)

Stone comparison this morning, razors were two Gold Monkeys from the same batch, and the stones were two karasu pattern barber size stones. The more orange one on the right is a little harder. Cream was D. R. Harris Windsor lathered with a Maggard SHD in the hippie handle, and a bit of orangey L’OP Cedrat finished things up. Test Monkey M7 off the harder stone was slightly smoother, now the question is ‘Can I bump up M8 with clear water strokes on the left hand stone?’ Time will tell.

Another great shave, from an American Made razor. I had a very smooth 2 pass shave, that left me BBS. Not one bit of tugging or discomfort with the ATG pass. Geneva Cutlery is one of the finest American Razor makers. As good, if not better, than a lot of big named European Blade makers.

Razor- "Ontario", by Geneva Cutlery Corp. Geneva N.Y..
    Brush- @oscar11 creation, Synthetic knot.
    Soap- Wholly Kaw "OUD".
Aftershave- Shulton Old Spice. "The Admiral" decanter.

The last of the three razors Glen rehoned is today’s SOTD. All three razors improved but this one least of all - up a half notch. It had very good sharpness but not the smoothness of the other two. Maybe I’ll have a different opinion next time I use it - you never know.

So, of the three, what used to be my least favorite jumped up to the best of the lot, the other two went up a half notch or a notch with today’s shave going from the best of the lot to the rear of the pack. All three back in good graces. :happy088:

I used this Herold Bro’s razor this morning. Not a good shave. Comfortable enough and it seemed sharp, but I just couldn’t get a close shave. Gave up after 3+ passes and the resulting socially acceptable shave (SOS), but overall pretty disappointed. I’m not sure if it was the razor, my technique or my prep, but the worst shave I’ve had in a while.

    Oh well, on to tomorrow.

Do not get discouraged .Their are a lot of factors that contribute to a good shave .Prep,Quality of soap and lather ,Technique and condition of the razors edge .Try a different razor on Monday and see how your results go .I had a razor that was polished by a Dremel Tool with buffing wheel .It was over heated and lost it temper .So as I shaved with it the edge just collapsed and stopped shaving well .I am not saying that your razor lost its temper just giving you an example I had with a bad shave .Over time our techniques and muscle memory improve. The straight razor experience will get better over time and become very rewarding .

Absolutely! This was my 11th consecutive shave with only a SR (no DE cleanup). The last 10 have gotten progressively better and are now as good as my DE shaves (even though they take a bit longer). I have no intention of giving up!

Interesting point about the temper. I’m not experienced enough to blame the razor since it’s more likely something I did, but this was the first time I could feel the blade get less sharp as I shaved. Maybe my stropping sucked this morning. Who knows?

As a finishing stone I used an "only for good razors stone" for this razor.[IMG]

Great shave this morning. I bought this razor off one of the forums for a really great price. It was sold as a Morley Clover, but the tang stamps are mostly worn off. All that’s left is a small piece that looks like “Worcester Mass”. I don’t think Morley ever made razors in or for Worcester (though it’s certainly possible). JR Torrey made a Tom of razors in Worcester, so that’s my current guess. I’m open to info if anyone has any. In either event, this is a great shaver! Laser sharp and incredibly smooth!
