What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

Yesterday was a Brian Brown shorty on loan, a very nicely made razor but that tip is wicked. Nick said that fro Brian, the edge actually went around that tip! He glassed it, lol, and I don’t blame him. Soap was Czech and Speake 88 lathered with a TOBS brush and a splash of Harris Pink AS finished up a great shave.

Today was shave #115 with the Sub Cero. I was reading Alfredo’s thread on B&B when he got 133-134 out of a vintage TI. Seems it held up well but went down pretty quickly once it began to go, and that was my observation with the previous two that I tested. I’m closing in, it should be interesting. This Filly SC has hard steel in it. Soap was Acca Kappa 1869 pre-reformulation lathered with a Lifetooshort1971 tulip style 3-band, and a dab of ABC almond balm finished up.

It's been a while since I used a Straight Razor, because of extremely long hours of work, 21 days straight work, and just plain tired. So, I picked up one of my trusted old razors, and an equally old brush. I had a very nice 2 pass shave, that left me BBS. Three days of growth wiped away. I missed the feeling of the Straight shave, compared to the DE shave with the Gillette Fatboy I've been using, over the past three weeks or so.

    Razor- C-MON, by Carl Monkhouse.
Brush- C-MON, "A-4", by Carl Monkhouse. Boar Knot. Its been cut down, because originally it was too floppy for me.
Soap- AOS Kingsman. Bourbon scented. No longer made.
Aftershave- Vintage Avon Spicy. "One Good Turn" decanter.

Inspired by Joe's @Trigger big Friodur I decided to use a twin razor.

The Archaic Alchemy Eureka Shaving Soap face-lathered well with my Jayaruh #313 Badger Brush. Two passes and touch ups with the J.R. Torrey gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse I finished off with Granddad's Blend AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

Another big razor, a Grelot 14 and it’s testing the koppa that it’s leaning on. This razor has always given problems taking the edge that I want, so after checking the bevel with a loupe, I went back to the Shapton Glass HR 4k, then to the Shapton Glass HC 6k, then to the koppa with tomo slurry. Et voilá! This is also one of the thinnest ground 14s that I have, and the steel is typically hard French steel. Cream was D. R. Harris Marlborough lathered with a Simpson 57 and Myrsol AB finished up a 10/10 shave.

Symmetrical Pottery is the vendor. Etsy store, some items ready made like my example from them, or they do custom requests.

My big blade finally returned to me fresh from @gssixgun. Yeah, this thing is really big. :chores016:

Shaving with it wasn’t as challenging as I thought it might be but I think I have to shave with it a few more times to get the best angle and technique. It wasn’t as smooth and close as I expected. But, I’ve been fooled before by first shaves so it’ll be back in use again soon. :happy093:

An early Koraat... beautiful lines of an exaggerated french point with a near wedge grind makes it pretty unique in my collection.

A couple of thumb notches to work with to provide the handling. Add a touch of green with the brush & soap and it was an enjoyable time at the sink. :)

Tonight, I shaved with my Joseph Elliot. This was my first reclamation project. It had a big chip and minor ones on the edge. I reset the bevel for my first time and went through my progression using lapping films. I had to do this a few times and it took a few hours to get it right. Ended up with a near BBS shave. She may not be pretty, but the old girl still has life in her. 20200615_012456.jpg

    Tonight's shave

Razor - Super Kikuboshi 6/8" this was the razor I fell in love with when I started shaving with a striaght. It was my white whale. A little over a year later and I still love it just as much as I did the first time I saw it.

    Strop - Red Imp 700c

Brush - Rick Montalvo I'm not sure what knot is in it. I bought it used. It feels like a 26mm knot.

    Soap - Stirling for him

Aftershave - Crabtree & Evelyn West Indian Lime Balm

Put a Shapton 16k edge on it this weekend and took it for a spin... quite the singer.

Joseph Rodgers ivory frameback with a fresh edge from ‘big ugly’ (details in the honing thread). This is a scale swap, the originals were shot and I had the period ivories around from a razor with a blade in poor condition, so off to Alfredo for the exchange. I don’t trust myself enough to pin ivory yet. Anyway, it shaved like a million bucks as Joseph Rodgers tend to do with a good edge on them. Soap was the always excellent SMN lathered with a Rooney Silvertip, and Myrsol AB finished up and I am baby dolphin butt smooth!

    Edit, Myrsol AB not ABC!
