    Cold Water Rinse
    Mitchell's Wool Fat Shave Soap
    3D Printed Brush
    Russian Rocket 5/8
    Pinaud Clubman Vegetal

The Mitchell's Wool Fat Shave Soap face-lathered well with Tom's 3D Printed Brush. Two passes and touch ups with the Russian Rocket 5/8 gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse I finished off with Pinaud Clubman Vegetal. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

Gold Monkey test razor M8, cream was SMN lathered with a M&F L7, and Myrsol Agua Balsamica in the St Germain bottle from the travel kit (Hey, travel. What’s that?) finished up a great shave. I was testing a slurry stone and it is a good match for the hone, details in the honing thread.

For tomorrow's shave, a Tanifuji Airi. The edge on this razor is unbelievably smooth and sharp. I'm a relatively new straight shaver, but my son has been straight shaving for almost two decades. He's passionate about Japanese razors. I've noticed that several of my son's Japanese razors have this shape blade. Is this a common shape for Japanese razors or is it just an indication that part of the blade has been removed. I haven't seen any solingen or sheffield blades with this shape.

Its Definitely been Modified Or Ground Away at the Heel..Quite Severely..That is NOT a Standard Factory Grind..Its Been Pretty Butchered in that Area..Probably Due to a Crack or Damage to the Heel Area..:happy088:

Big Revisor on a lazy Saturday. This one is 15/16” and the gold is still in darn good shape.

As I was shaving, it was a little weird that the pivot pin seemed so close to the end of the scales... then I figured it was on purpose to minimize the rubbing circle on the tang’s gold. Pretty nice design element.

Thanks, Billy! The remaining edge is quite smooth and sharp. I'm going to probably have to get one of these Japanese razors. Any recommendations? I do like the edge on this mutilated Tanifuji.

Thanks, Billy! I've been looking at some Kikuboshi's, Tanifuji's and Saito's. Any thoughts? As a newbie, those smiling blades are probably out of my expertise.

The shape of the relieved heel is common on Japanese razors, it was a way of making it into a shortie, which they preferred.

And yeah! I have a covered-tang Cape that’s worn down from 13/16 to 6/8, and it shaves like a million bucks.

I think that a lot of these with ‘relieved’ heels were western-style razors and some of them were professionally modified by relieving the heel and/or toe - pictures later!

I wouldn’t discount a slight smile, and I think it would work great early on in your journey if you like the look.

Maybe not the crazy smile of a Saito SK1, but the moderate smile of a SK3 is a joy to use. Really easy to shave the hollows of you neck without the worry of the point slicing into the skin. Just my two cents... plus they always bring a :).

Jeff, my experience is that most of the Japanese razors are excellent. I own a Saito Sk-3, an amazing razor but I think it maybe to light for you. Smiling razors are easy to shave with but a little tricky to hone.

Filarmonica 13, first shave after a touch up. @jgreenepa Jeff this is on of my razors that Kevin did for me. I hated the original scales so he set up with this cool set of shoes.
