That’s true Jeff, really nice razor. I have tried to get a good edge on some of my Sheffield razors, but they just don’t deliver that nice edges as this Geneva and of course the Swedish razors. Now probably some folks out there will have another opinion. But the feeling is quite close to my Swedish razors. Guess it comes to steel quality?

    Thank you Hans!

Imhave a different idea about Sheffield steel. They used a lot of Swedish steel, as did everyone making fine cutting tools back then. But my early Dheffield ‘cast steel’, ‘a ier fondue’ raxors are very hard, some of them Torblöm hard, and they’re very fine grained steel. Later on, maybe 18e0-1840 the steel seemed to get much softer. I don’t think that they were hardening/tempering it the same way after a certain point.

Steve, could be the reason. I have some left to hone from Sheffield, so the verdict will come

Thank you Hans, it’s a favorite because of the memories. It shaves as well as any razor and has hard French steel, but the shape is not the most ergonomic though you get used to it.

This Filly example is a 4th generation, not as coveted as the 1st….but it’s a great shaver and looker for me. Maybe some day it’ll get a chance to meet one of it’s great great grandfathers. :scared011:

    Boker Abalone
    Brush: Chisel & Hound
    Suds & Balm: Jabonman Mediterraneo

First go with this Boker and it was lovely. A nice surprise in that it is a solid 7/8”, and I enjoy what Boker did with these scales.

Very nice Boker Tom, I’ve been wondering about those. What’s the grind and steel like?

Filly 14 Sub Cero, a Thäter boar did the lathering on Strop Shoppe Russian Tea tallow, and Myrsol AB and a spritz of Floris 1962 finished up a nice December shave.

The Thäter boar was my first boar brush bought a couple of years ago off a BST. The knot is very similar to a SOC in density and backbone but is a little larger, and of course the handle is an iconic Thäter style. I wouldn’t pay $80-85 US for it, but at $35 and on it’s way to broken in, why not?

Thank you Steve. Here is a picture of the grind… not stiff but also not a singer.

I am not a huge fan of modern German steel - not really sure why, but this one was all about the scales.

I agree with you Tom, better Steel earlier days. It was not better in the past, but perhaps the future was better

Féret Freres 7/8 frameback, cream and AS were AdP lathered with a SOC. This setup made for a really nice Sunday shave.

Today’s razor was a 1940s vintage orihi (‘gutter’ type) Japanese kamisori. Soap was MdC original in the ‘brain bowl’ with a thin film of MdC 4-oil Marseilles soap (very, very, slick) under the lather. An Omega boar did the lathering and there’s Myrsol Agua Balsamica in the St Germain bottle that’s a space saver in the bathroom.

I have another orihi kamisori coming tomorrow I hope, so it may be a honing day soon.
