Thank you Steve. It’s a pretty thin grind for such a big blade… great sound.

This was my very first straight razor that I purchased in Nov 2018. It will always have a sentimental meaning for me.

The Jonathan Crookes rattler up again, what a lovely razor. Soap was MdC Vetyver lathered with a vintage Mondial boar, and a splash of SMN herbal water finished up a nice shave on a spring-like day.

I got the Mondial off eBay with an Avon ladies brush (I presume) for cheap, assuming that I’d have to re-knot the Mondial if I wanted to use it, old boar brushes bought on the Bay don’t have a good track record. Surprise! They’re both new. No splitting, no odor, no shedding (at least the Mondial, I haven’t lathered the Avon brush yet).

I haven’t posted much lately except for Friday’s frameback, but today was shave 68 with the Rifuto and the edge is still going quite well. It has now surpassed albeit by one shave, the Filarmonica Doble Temple, and a Cape 1000 by 5 shaves. I can only speculate that what I learned about secondary strops from the previous edge tests, including the Filarmonica Sub Cero‘s 153 shaves, has helped this one keep going. Both the Cape 1000 and the Filly DT were maintained with Kanoyama canvas, the Sub Cero at the end was used to test linen, and the Rifuto has been maintained mostly with linen, and 3 post shave uses of the Sharptonn poly firehose, which seems to be working.

The edge is to the point where the difference in soaps is more noticeable than with a fresh edge, so I’ve been testing some currently available soaps.

    - 3P brick
    - Bullgoose Asylum Levante
    - MWF
    - La Toja (mashed into a jar)
    - Pre de Provence
    - Stirling (beef tallow)
    - Haslinger v1
    - AdP

The 3 soap standouts were AdP (should be for the price!), PdP, and La Toja. So 2 of the 3 better performers are actually quite cheap. I suspect that PdP is cheaper to use than Arko but haven’t tested that yet. These all have excellent post shave feel. MWF wasn’t my favorite but I have known for years that if you’re buffing shaved areas and your skin gets a little dry, the edge has a tendency to want to grab or ‘dig in’, so wet skin is a must. My lather was pretty wet, so I don’t think that the lather was too dry, it would fall off the brush if I weren’t careful. Maybe DE shavers would not notice this? MWF post shave is of course classic, but honestly no better than AdP, La Toja, or PdP. Asylum Levante did kind of the same thing, but I revisited it with a wetter lather and it did really well and is a very nicely scented soap too, but not quite up to La Toja, AdP, and PdP. 3P is the price standout for what you can get a brick for in Europe, it’s just under the top 3 but 1000ml of AdP would be about $500! It’s difficult to best 3P brick for value
