What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

Tuesday morning shave, my first idea was to try the newly acquired CVH MK No.32, just stropped “out of the box”, didn’t work.. so instead the STILLE instead, smooth as a peach .

Another shave, with a great razor. I had a nice 2 pass shave, with BBS results. One weeper, due to a tiny bump on the face.

Razor- C-MON Special, By Peter J Mitchell.
Brush- Razorock 400. High Mountain Badger knot. Very nice solid feel to this brush.
Soap- ARKO
Aftershave- Shulton Old Spice. Mmmmm Mmmmm Gooood.

Engstrom in ivory with fancy caps, software was AdP, and a the brush a new Vie-Long boar out for it’s first ‘voyage’.

 

I don't think I've ever said this before but this was a crummy shave. This needs some serious work on the stones. Can steel degrade or crumble? It wasn't honed that long ago.

It shouldn’t crumble, Wosty was always good steel. Maybe if it wasn’t clean when put away os the only thing that comes to mind.

 

From the look.of the picture, is it the Toe end that crumbled?? I tend to agree with Steve, Wostie steel is known to be excellent. The bevel looks about the correct angle. I have had more than one well known razors with delicate edges, but those were cured with a layer or two of tape, to get a smaller bevel.
Then again, someone who had it prior to you, could have messed around with it, too much, and screwed up the temper of the steel.
The wife isn't pissed of at you for anything, is she?? Been known to happen.

 

O.K. so Wosty or George Johnson? Not clear to me, the ‘pipe’ is upside down, but there’s no ‘dart’.

What is your opinion about that old Eskilstuna razor? I think that the older a razor is, the better they are. The razors produced today don’t have the same steel quality as it seems.

Thank you Hans, In general I agree, the old Swedish steel was some of the best, and this one is no exception. It’s one of a ‘homemade’ 7-day set, they’re in a leather roll-up bag with the days of the week indicated on the bag sleeves. But this is the only ivory razor, the rest are black bakelite/hard rubber.

Good steel is where you find it I think. I like the TI C135 ‘Carbonsong’ steel but it’s difficult to find a well-ground razor from TI these days. The Japanese Yasuki steel is also very good but most if not all the makers are out of business now. The American steel from makers like Geneva was also very good and will hold the finest edge.

The cheap GBS razor that I honed for Eric had good steel in it though the razor was very poorly made, but at 17.5 degrees, it was holding a straight, even edge without a burr or fin even at 500 grit with pressure while re-cutting the bevels. It isn’t as hard as old Swedish steel but few razors are. Some of the old English cast steel from the late 1700s - early 1800s is as hard and fine grained as Swedish steel, but they were kind of hit or miss.

 

Thanks all - definitely a Wosty (stamped on reverse side) and it is the toe end. Under the loupe it is very ragged, almost a saw tooth appearance but missing a tooth here and there. I won it years ago in a TSD raffle and Glen honed it recently so I’m confident it was honed properly. I’ve heard it’s very hard to ruin the temper but it’s a good bit of the bevel that’s in bad shape. I’m thinking of sending it off to @gssixgun to see what he thinks - it may end up being a fine letter opener.

As a side note, my 1941 ZTV is a near replica but I haven’t been in the mood to pick up my Russians so I went with the Wosty.

I have a couple of Sheffield razors, but so far I have not found anyone that is as good as Swedish or Solingen razors. The best new razor I have is the TI, followed by Solingen. Regarding Swedish steel, many razor manufacturers used Swedish steel and still it’s the most common for razor blades.
