Sheffield steel got really soft around 1830 or so. Some of the old cast steel razors of the late 1700s and very early 1800s make my Tornblöm look soft! They could be hit or miss though, but if you got a good piece of steel, it could be as good as anything since.

I see, problem though is too find such old razors, and if they are a hit or a miss.. Honestly I have never found a bad steel quality of a Swedish razor. They could be curved and so on..

MdC original in brain bowl, lathered with a Vie-Long boar and a splash of Myrsol AB and a spritz of L’OP finished up a great dpring shave. The Razor is a Jonathan Crookes Gentleman’s Hollow Ground Razor.

Great 2 pass shave, that left me BBS. For a modern made straight razor, this one is one of the greats.

Thursday morning shave, Gipson Razor 7/8”. Not as smooth using a full hollow ground, but good enough. Also a little bit sore in the skin.

Scott, didn’t see that you used the same brand as I did this morning. Interesting to see the difference in opinion about what you think about the same thing.

Sometimes, certain razors don't agree with some people. Is it the factory edge, or did you hone it?

It is the factory edge, just stropping it. Could be the reason why I don’t fancy Sheffield razors as they mostly are wedges or half hollow.

There are few Wedges that agree with my face, no matter how sharp. Put a good edge on the Gipson and give it another try.
My Gipson is a 1 inch half hollow. But, the grind is fairly thick, towards the edge. It acts similar to a wedge, no blade flex at all. But, it does do a very nice job, especially after I re-honed it. Perhaps the previous owner wasn't thrilled with the shave, and factory edge.

Filly 14 Novodur, soap was La Toja lathered with a Zenith boar, and a splash of Speick finished up a perfect shave. The new kiita got a classy black coat of cashew.
